I was reading through the forums last night, and actually saw a few designs to see if it would be possible to build a nerf bolt action rifle. I had a deep thought last night, and worked out all of the needed components and every measurement needed to produce the rifle. I came to a problem, however, at the bolt. I need a size of PVC that would make a snug fit on a 1/2" stefan or stock dart, yet be able to have the dart slide into the PVC without having to twist it in. Would SCH 80 work well with this? This will probably be used as the bolt, and will have an o-ring at the front to make an artight seal with a 1/2" PVC barrel.

Would SCH 80 work?

Ive been thinking about a bolt action rifle too. I found out that I would have to use tape to fit one pipe inside another snugly.

Assuming you don't want to use shells: there really isn't a good fit like you're talking about in PVC. It largely depends on your stefans; some people can get a fit like that with CPVC, but then you have a fit problem with the other parts you're building with.

A diiferent approach is to use nested pieces of brass inside of your PVC, rather than expecting to make your seal from the PVC itself. Check out recent blasters from Boltsniper and Ompa to see this approach.

Of course, if you're building something that uses shells, check out the SCAR and the FAR for possible solutions to your problems. Hell, even if you're not building a gun that uses shells, read about the FAR and the SCAR...you'll learn a lot about homebuilding from those designs.

I've found my solution. I'm using gray SCH80 PVC that fits snugly into a 1/2" coupler as the bolt, and the barrel is 1/2" PVC. The plunger will be located right behind the bolt. I'm working on a rifle frame now. If anyone would like to contribute anything to the design, please post now, as I've already started to build major componenets.

Sorry for the double post, but I'm going to update on the progress.

The rifle is about 90% done. I found an old rifle stock with grip, probably from a .22, in the basement. This will be my frame. The plunger is almost finished, as it only needs an O-ring. Does anyone know what size I would use. The plunger head is a 1/2" endcap that should fit into some 1" thinwall PVC. The bolt needs a handle and o-ring as well, then everything will be done, and I can start assembling the parts. I'll post pictures once I have a chance to take them, and then I may post some videos of the gun firing. I've determined it's going to be a shell-less system. It looks like a real rifle, except the bolt and chamber area has been moved forward to allow the plunger system to sit where the bolt would on a real bolt-action firearm.

Questions, comments, concearns, flames?
