Not sure which automatic is right for me.

My intent is not for this to be a "which is better" thread; if it's too close to one, no offense was meant.

I was looking to buy either a Magstrike or RF20. They're fairly similar: each has twenty shots (if the Magstrike is modded) and neither is known for its range and accuracy. What other significant differences do they have? Is the Magstrike easier to mod? Are their ranges/accuracy comparable? Is the bulk of the RF20 inconvenient?

The magstrike is just as big, if not bigger, than an RF20.

Magstrike realistically only shoots 10 shots without a clip switch, unless you are one of the few crazies who have actually taken the time to 20 mod it. (I only know of one other person who has actually built a 20, and that is Slug.

Unmodded, an RF 20 is better, personally.

I have yet to mod an Rf20, so i can't make a mod comparison.

Also, for the MS, stock at least, you have to pump, like, 20-30 times for 10 shots and then relode/pump for the next ten shots; where as on the RF20, you pump like 20-24 times to shoot 20.

Shot ratio

MagStrike: 1/2-1/3
RapidRire20: 1/1-1/1.2

RF20=pump less per shot, also known to break after harsh use.

MagStrike=More Expensive, more pumps, modable, quicker to reload.

I have also had bad experiance with MS's because I bought one and it would only fire like 4 darts at most before I had to pump up again, exchanged it for a different one, same thing, repeated the whole thing again, same thing happend, got mad and got a RF20.

How do the ranges and accuracy compare?

With mods Forsaken got 70 feet in BAD conditions. Nerfmonkey got 62ft with CPVC. I cant determine stock because I took out ARs on the Magstrike clips.

To avoid confusion, my CPVC mod was on an RF20. It also didn't have any internal mods but it still only averaged 50' flat. 62' was the highest and somewhere in the 20s or 30s was the lowest.

Stock RF20s average about 20-25' flat. Magstrikes are probably closer to 25 or 30, but my friend's stock one only got about 10-15 for some reason. Mine was average.

Sans barrel mods, a Magstrike should be able to get about 50' flat with a banded bladder and a plug of that little white seal piece behind the clips. RF20s could get that range but due to the higher chance of fucking something up with banding the bladder, I decided to go with a barrel mod of CPVC instead to try to achieve higher ranges. It worked but as I said above it ranged from 30-60' and every shot was different. Neither is spectacularly accurate but my Magstrike is accurate enough to hit a smallish (8x12") target from about 30' away with half a clip. I think my RF20 was probably about as accurate (pre-barrel mod) but its ranges were much less so it didn't seem like it.

Both great autos. I have modded my RF20 and its amazing. It gets close to my NF ranges!

The Magstrike does have a much faster reload time though.

I couldn't tell you which is better, you can't go wrong with either.

I think I'll probably go with a Magstrike. Range and accuracy are more important to me than RoF. Plus, I'd like to see if I can make custom mags for it.

That would be VERY hard.

Yeah, it also helps if your nuts are made of steel. Or atleast as hard as steel, to ensure that you can shoot far enough.

The Magstrike magazines are made of carefully machined plastic to exact specifications. Unless you have the same capability, anything you make is simply not going to work, and even if you had the tools to do it, it would still be a remarkably hard and worthless endeavor.

Tell me, how do you think these things work exactly?

Just so you guys know Captian Slug has come up with blueprints for 10 and 20 round MS clips.
The one thing I have to say for the RF20 is that it has a bigger piston. But the MS is super easy to modify and id has clips. Those are always fun. :)

I mod nerf guns so they look good. So leave my scopes, doodads, and trinkets alone I like them. I don't mind the weight and I started out that way on toy guns and its not going to change.

It doesn't matter how they work as long as the homemade interfaced in the same way. What part do you think would be difficult? The teeth on the side might be tedious, but I really don't see what would make it difficult as long as care was taken.

And even I haven't gotten around to making them because of the amount of machining that is required. The parts have to be accurate down to a half of a millimeter in order to function properly. I have access to the tools required, but I don't know of anyone else on the forum (except for maybe Kbarker) who has a similar collection of tools.

The RapidFire 20 is easier to modify well since it's mechanically simpler and its piston is a little more efficient because it doesn't have to stroke as far as the one in the magstrike.

The worst part is, the same thing happened to me, except I bought 3 from Canada. It would have cost me too much money to send them back. It wasn't worth it. I sent one in to Hasbro, but it still hasn't been returned to me.

The problem is that Hasbro had a defective backflow valve on the pump for the MS. After so many PSI, it stopped taking on air.

My university has a machine shop with tools whose purpose I couldn't begin to guess. And two rapid prototypers, one for plastic and one for metal. I could probably squeak by.

You should get a Rapid Fire 20, I have a magstrike and a rapid fire 20 and the rapid fire 20 is alot better. It is cheaper, more fun to use, less pumping, a heck of alot quieter, and a higher amount of darts to shoot. It also has a switch for lower rate of fire and higher rate of fire. Id go with the Rapid Fire 20.

What everyone is trying to say to you is don't even try to make your own clips. It would be easier and if you made them out of polycarbonate it would be less expensive to buy one magstrike and then one of the two packs of the magstrikes to get 4 clips from and that way you would have six clips and three magstrikes. Don't forget about all of the plastic that will be used in the experimental stage of it also. Also some people may sell clips to you if you look in the trading forum.

No, I was saying it would be a difficult and tedious task even if you have all of the right tools. Like I do.
