So I finally got a longshot today, while passing through a wal-mart in the middle of Nowhere, East Texas.

I've played around with it a bit stock, got the feel for it, and of course I've been reading about y'all's modifications for about four months now...

Here's what I plan to do:
  • Air restrictor/peg removal so it can fire stefans
  • Clip modification to fit stefans
  • Miscellaneous seal improvement
  • Spring replacement
But I've got some questions.

On #2, referencing The Inventor Guy's mod, specifically, the clip-modification part, I do not have access to "acrylic," as he used. What can I use instead?

On #4, the general consensus on replacement springs seems to be a Nightfinder or BBB spring, except the NF spring isn't quite big enough for the LS... I think. I do not have access to a BBB or a BBB spring, so what should I do?. Just stretch a NF spring to fit and add it? Add two of them? What did y'all use with success? I can order online if need be.

Finally, assuming I add/replace springs, should I reinforce anything, and if so, what and where?

Thank you for your time.

I'm going to help you out because you recognize the fact that Gengar is a fucking Bad Ass pokemon in Red/Blue, and one of my best.

For converting LS clips for use with Micros, you can use pretty much anything that's rigid enough. Dark Shrimp used square aluminum tubing I believe. Home Depot and hobby shops should have it.

As far as Springs, I have a solo Maxshot spring in mine. I am going to experiment with springs eventually. I have heard using BBB, NF, Maxshot, the stock spring, and even someone with an xbow spring. I will most likely use a BBB spring in addition to the Maxshot, but I need to see how much of a pain in the ass it is to cock back. There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer to this, so really the best I can say is to experiment and get it to a point that you are comfortable operating it with.

CaptainSlug, I, and others use part of an AR-15 action spring, as well as the stock spring in our Longshots. I think Boltsniper uses them as well. Unfortunately, Bravo Company no longer stocks the springs by themselves. You want something like this but cheaper, hopefully.

As far as getting AR-15 springs on the cheap, try finding a "gun show" in your area. I got mine for $2 at the Pennsylvania Gun Collecter's show just last month...or was it just a couple weaks ago? Stupid memory.

I plan on using it for a homemade, by the way, so I don't know anything about fitting one in a longshot.

To fit it in the LS, you have to cut a little more than half of it off. The rest of the spring could be used in a homemade or another stock gun.

I heard about using AR-15 springs a while ago so I did some searching and found a site that sells them for cheap. Theres two different ones, standard and carbine. I'm not sure what the difference is (aside from what type of AR-15 they go in), but I've used the standard ones and they are quite strong. Very difficult to cut through too, anyone mind telling me what they use to cut them?

The difference is their length. I'm most familiar with the carbine length which can be cut to a 3-7/8 or 3-3/4 inch length in order to be used in the longshot.
If you add a stronger spring to the plunger chamber you should also add a stronger spring to the trigger plate to prevent misfires.

The Nite Finder springs people talk about putting in their Longshots aren't really from Nite Finders. They're actually the Handyman brand springs, bought from Home Depot, that Cartoon popularized by putting in his Nite Finder integrations. The springs slid around a bit so if you're going to use them I suggest using one full spring and a quarter of another (they come in packs of two).

I can vouch for that! I made that simple mistake a while back and my longshot fired misfired pointblank into my wall in the hall way. A dent in the drywall was the cost of forgetting that simple step.

I use needlenose pliers to cut any long metal piece (wire, spring, etc) that I can fit in them. (And thank you for the link.)

I use a dremel to cut springs that are to thick to cut with wire cutters. And I might just be lucky because after over 200 shots my LS still hasn't misfired on me.

Dammit, not you too...... Why does everyone play Pokemon?!?!?

As far as the misfires go, the catch spring on the plate in the very back of the gun (the catch) needs to be replaced or have other springs added to it. The springs in some pens will work nicely, but you can always find spare mini-springs after modding certain guns. Remember: you want the catch strong enough to hold the plunger and not break or slip, but you also need to be able to fire it with relative ease.

I opened it up and removed the air restrictor, stock, and bipod. I used a newly-acquired dremel to get at it, and, compared to grinding bits in traditional power drills, it was beautiful .

I haven't modded the clips yet, but it can be coaxed into firing 2" stefans. I note, however, that they go every which way. This is due, I assume, to the stock barrel, which isn't really a barrel at all.

Naturally, I want to add a real barrel, but my modding/tool-using skills are not up to the level where I'd be able to create a new bolt/breech - I can cut barrel material, insert and seal, but nothing like Angel did to his LS.

The question, then is this: Is it worth it just to stick some brass down the barrel, and not replace the breech?

Look up theveg's (i think) brass breech mod. It's basically a simplified FA brass breech.

Because Pokemon is fucking awesome. Wait...........

Scratch that, WAS awesome. I think it jumped the shark after emerald. Enough with rereleasing the same game. Aren't the new versions just remakes of the original with new characters? Really, do I need a 4th or 5th incarnation of Charmander, Bulbasaur, or Squirtle to start? Thanks Nintendo.

Pokemon Gold/Silver = as awesome as Red/Blue (if not moreso)...and I didn't get any more after that.

Anyway, I'm probably going to be replacing my LS spring soon (or just adding one), but I'm a little afraid that the back cover of the plunger tube (what the spring pushes against) is just going to snap off. Does anyone have any tips for reinforcing it?

I see two things that need to be reinforced:

1. The plastic "plate" itself, along with the tabs attached to it (which is where the screws go through). This could be reinforced by simply placing a piece of sheet metal over it. The metal would also go over the tabs, and the screws could go through it.

2. The tabs on the plunger chamber itself. These could snap right off, and I have no idea how they could be reinforced.

Or should I just stop being a pussy and add a spring?

PS: I searched, and there are no members named "theveg" on NH or NHQ. Just letting you know.

Here's the thread on TheVeg's mod. I used the same set up with very few problems (except for stupidly bending the brass while it was out of the gun). If you measure correctly, you will be able to fit the stock length darts and have an airtight seal. I had better ranges when I pushed the dart into the 17/32" by hand, and might suggest something to force the dart into the smaller brass. A paper clip recessed in the 9/16" brass and affixed with JB Weld might work.

What some might not realize is that the rear of the plunger tube is hardly stressed inside the gun at all. It rests against those tabs, as you point out, and they support the force of the compressed spring. Someone might have a suggestion of a putty or epoxy to reinforce the tabs with, but mine don't show any signs of stress.

Stop being a pussy and go for it! Definitely add a spring. Strongly consider the breech. The brass breech was my first mod that risked the destruction of the gun and it is so very satisfying to be able to use the Longshot box as a bullet trap.

When installed in the gun body it butts up against some thick crossmembers. There's really no need to reinforce it if it's installed correctly.

Yep, the only thing I had go wrong with mine (LS spring + beefy NF spring from home depot) was the plunger head screw flew off when I cocked it once, so I wrapped it up in some duct tape and rethreaded it through, hasn't given me a problem since!

So I guess I was wrong about TheVeg, and wrong about it needing reinforcement. Oh well...I guess I underestimated Hasbro. As soon as I first saw how it was put together, I sarcastically said to myself "Oh, that's never going to break. "

And apparently NH counts spaces when listing alphabetically...for instance, "the punisher" is before "thecheat."

Anyway, alright. Once I'm finally done with this school year (3 days!) I'll suck it up and go for it. Plus, I think I might actually be able to accomplish Theveg's brass breech mod...hopefully.

Looking around for places to buy brass online (as nowhere near me, not hobby lobby, ace, home depot, lowes, et.al. have it) I've encountered another question --

Are 1' segments of brass long enough for a longshot barrel and breech?

I'd be attempting something like the breech linked earlier here - bolt brass slides inside barrel brass, 17/32" sliding into 9/16".

Yes. But keep in mind you're going to need to perform some very exacting tool work in order to make a brass breech. And you will also probably need to modify your magazines as well.
