I'm working on a design for a magazine-fed, as-automatic-as-possible NF. This is obviously not a trivial mod. ;)

My goal is to be able to pull back the plunger and fire without manually actuating the reloader. This will require that three systems work together:

1. The magazine. This has been done before. An Angel clip or a homemade would work. There's plenty of space on the NF to put in a mag in place of the "laser" light and ammo holders. It would be nice to have it locked in and disengaged by a lever, but this is not a main or necessary part of the mod.

2. The action. A bolt wouldn't work in the NF; not enough room between the mag and stationary air tank. My current plan is as follows: An outer barrel consists of PVC or something similar. The outer barrel has a hole to interface with the magazine and does not move. The inner barrel is 17/32 brass. When the plunger is pulled back, the inner barrel moves forward to allow a dart into the barrel; when the plunger is pulled almost all of the way back, the inner barrel snaps back into place covering the hole and sealing it.

3. The inner barrel movement mechanism. The inner barrel could work in a simple bolt-like mechanism. It would have a peg/handle that would protrude through an L-shaped slot in the outer barrel to move it backward and forward and lock it in the back. (This is nothing new.) The challenge would be getting this to happen automatically using the motion of pulling the plunger back. The inner barrel peg would probably be held in the locked position with a spring; the difficulty would merely be getting the handle to pull it forward and then release.

The main two difficulties I'm having are as follows:

I'm concerned that 17/32 brass might have trouble sliding around a micro stefan. I could make the outer barrel slightly larger and use a full-length 9/16 inner barrel, but this might decrease ranges.

I also don't really know exactly how the inner barrel movement mechanism would connect to the plunger. Getting it to move forward is easy, but getting it to "let go" is not.

I know that you guys tend to frown on topics long on ideas and short on implementation, but I'm not just posting an idea; I have a fairly detailed idea of how it will be done. I think that the end result will be worth it.

Thanks for any feedback!

It has already been done. look in the nerfhq forums. its there.

Blasphemy. I think you need to throw yourself against a wall, drive to store and buy yourself a brain.

I searched nerfhq. I found several topics that were relevant but none that successfully did this. I found a reference here to a mod that seemed to do something similar by integrating part of one of those miniature guns, but the link is dead. A user (Paragon) in that thread has a user pic that looks like what I'm trying to do, but if it's a real gun and not just a pic, I can't find a thread about it.

I also found this NF, which looks similar but has a nonfunctional magazine; this one, which has a magazine-like dispenser; and several guns like this SM1000, which is manually operated.

It's not as if I haven't bothered to do a search; if there's something I missed, a link in the right direction would be more helpful than telling me that it's already been done. ;)

nerfer909 you need to read the rules. No images in sigs.

Thom - KBarker's first post on the Haven contained a Clipped NF. You can see it here.

He wants an NF that can shoot multiple shots without having to actually touch a bolt or push down a clip. I think the closest thing you could get to that is something like THIS It's my NF clip inspired by Carrtoon. The ranges aren't too great, but I didn't have a good o-ring and I didn't have a good seal between my barrels. I may actually try this again.

That looks like what I'm trying to do, but the link only shows it in action. Does the original thread still exist?

That is the original thread. That was KBarker's very first post. Sorry.

Sorry, RAMBO, I meant NiteWalker's link. KBarker's clip is a neat one, but it doesn't automatically advance. Also, it requires materials that I don't have.

This really isn't much of an exciting idea, as it will be too big to still be a sidearm and not powerful enough to be a primary, I bet it will end being a showpiece. If that is what you want, stop reading. On the other hand, you can spend probably the same amount of time and attempt a Nite-Mav, which has practicality written all over it.

Do you think that it would have to be much bigger than an NF?

I thought about a Nite-Mav, but that's been done several times before.

So wait, are you trying to make a practical mod for use in a war, or are you trying to do a mod just for the hell of it?

I'd like it to be practical, but I'd do it anyway if that were not possible.
