A while back I was sitting around with some friends talking about elementary school memories. One of our favorites was the rubberband and paper hornets. We then came up with an idea to make these giant hornets and shoot them with a coat hanger with 2 or 3 rubberbands connecting on both sides of the hanger. The result was similar to a sling shot. We made a ton of ammo and set up some cover in my basement and played. These things aren't the best in accuracy but they definitely hit hard. I was hit from about 20 ft away once and I could feel the sting.

Here is one of my sling shots. If you're going to play, make sure you use this kind of coat hanger. You can also store one hornet on each side of the hanger.

When we were playing upstairs, we flipped a desk chair in my bedroom upside down and supported the seat of it on the edge of my bed. Then we tied about 5 rubberbands together and used it as a cannon. This thing is powerful.

Yeah those are sweet! Me and my buddies were having a war with one of those and a hornet hit my eye and swelled it shut for a couple days. It was covered in cardboard and duct tape. So always use eye protection when using these suckers.

I used to play this last year with my brothers in our old apartment. One base was the kitchen and the other was the dining room (set about 15 feet apart). We would use the original sized hornets and single rubber bands so it still hurt like a bitch and was accurate enough to get some funny headshots.

We would always end up losing each hornet and breaking each rubber band. Sometimes we'd find hornets weeks later and then play again. We even almost made a list of rules so that by brother couldn't keep moving so close to the other base and get some cheap shots.

Thanks for reminding me about it but I don't think there is an optimal battle field in the house we live in now. We'll have to change that somehow.

Okay, I think this would be better in Off Topic, as it's not exactly "nerf". Also, when you said a fun alternative to Nerf, are you implying nerf is boring? I mean, would this forum be here if it was boring? If you're bored, you can always do what every 14 year old guy does in the bathroom when he is a little lonely. Some people would consider that fun. Maybe even as far as orgasmic fun. But yeah, good idea, but I'm all for nerf (no offence).

Calm down. Maybe "alternative" wasn't the best choice of words, but I have to agree that it looks awesome. My friend has made some of these and likes to shoot people in the neck.

Ever try making a bow an arrow out of a coat hanger? My other friend and I did that once and shot some wooden sticks around in his basement; they'd pierce cardboard at close range. Fun stuff.

Wow. I agree with every word in that sentence.

This is interesting but what's wrong with nerf? More ammo, reliability in the guns, more range, more durable, etc.

I remember in fifth grade a kid who was kind of my friend shot me with one of those metal paper clip hornets. That thing killed. It had a metal tip and everything on it.

I think what he means by "alternative to nerf" is "bored without guns." This happened to me just a few days ago; I was with my cousins but hadn't brought any of my guns with me so we shot rubber bands around instead. Yes, I would have much much rather had my dual CFs, but it was better than nothing.

I apologize if people think I was excited/mad/word with strong exclamatory connotation. It is a good idea, and I see what you mean by being bored with guns. I guess I'm a little bit of a stickler for definitions of things.

I remember in high school shop we made bean shooters out of a 3 liter bottle and a heavy duty balloon. Those things were killer. Same concept of being bored and using what you had on hand to shoot at each other with. Nerfing is at a completely different level than these primitive amusements but they are inexpensive and take little prep time to set up.

Under this same category I’d put paper throwing stars (I’ve made hundreds) and modified paperclips that you shoot with rubber bands between a couple fingers. I’ve seen blowguns made of drinking straws and frilly toothpicks and spit wads would have to be counted as well.

All in all good and mostly clean fun at short notice, definitely an off topic topic though.
