This may be a little crazy, and I'm not sure if it's even possible, but some of you seem to be able to mimick everything in Nerf.

I watch this show called Futureweapons, where they have different guns, missiles, aircraft, explosives, etc., and they showed a gun that was based on the principle that the only moving part is the barrel, making mechanics incredibly simple, and the gun insanely fast.

The gun (in real weaponry) works by stacking several rounds into each of its barrels (4 on handgun), and then igniting the caps in order, making it the fastest firing weapon ever, and it doesn't require a clip.

I thought that the bullets could be darts, and that instead of igniting anything, air could be pumped in.

all that really matters is the part about the chip sending electric charges to behind bullets, what if one of the mechanical geniuses here could make something mechanical to pump air behind darts in order? I think that would be the end of slow barrel reloads.

The answer is no, it would be pointlessly complicated.

Most Ballguns work this way. Take a look at a Ballzooka for an example. I suppose that concept could be used with darts, but as CaptainSlug pointed out, it would be very complicated.

Do some research into Ballguns for inspiration and then see what you can do with darts.

First off I would like to clarify my opinion of Futureweapons. The show has THE WORST writing of any show I have ever seen on any of the Discovery network channels. The garbage that issues forth from the unintentionally comical host is at best 25% accurate and 75% marketing drivel with a very limited selection of adjectives that make him sound even dumber. He's a decent interviewer, but a terrible host. They should not have bothered to let him say anything on camera.

Do some research into Ballguns for inspiration and then see what you can do with darts.

Yeah, but the foam balls offer an entirely different surface area for the air to interact with and the barrel to seal upon. But with cylindrical darts you have no such dimensional advantage.

If you stack darts end-to-end and introduce pressurized air from behind all of them will shoot out of the barrel at the same time. If you added an air inlet behind each dart in the barrel the introduced air would fir the first dart fine, but each successive dart when traveling down the barrel would lose its seal when passing the air inlet meant for the previous dart.

Except I would change it to, "some of you seem to want to hope for everything you see on TV or a video game to be mimicked in Nerf."

I happened to see that particular episode while visiting my mother's house last week (I don't have cable TV at my home on another island, by choice), and I must say I was intrigued, and wondered when, not if, someone was going to mention it on the Nerf related forums.


Actually, if you do a "search" for user named 3DBBQ, he had some pretty innovative tube-magazined designs that worked a lot like that principle. The darts were in a tubular barrel that was constricted at one point, and the entire unit pressurized by way of an air reservoir and ball valve. The darts would head to the area of least resistance (barrel end), and the constriction would limit the firing to one dart at a time, but in rapid succession.

If the video still is linked to the thread, the dart ROF was pretty impressive.

Pardon the kid's English, he's from Taiwan or somewhere in those parts, but his innovation was incredible. Hope he comes back to visit.

EDIT: Hey, CS...give the host of Futureweapons a break. He's a retired SEAL, not an actor. Those guys talk more with their hands than their mouths.

I too have seen this episode. It's called the metal storm, and it works by electonically firing individual charges that will launch the bullets out of the barrel. It's not the actual barrel that moves. If you want to see that, look at the internals of a Scout.

As for the show, I agree with Slug on the host, but I still like to see what kind of cool stuff our military has, as I will never enlist until this country is invaded a la Red Dawn. WOLVERINES! No to mention, I'm getting just old enough to be out of their radar.

Yah, I know and totally agree, the host uses the same nonscientific terms repetedly, I just put it on mute and watch for the bizar, or more practical things, this was probably an impractical, bizar thing. I was thinking that the pressure input system here would solve some motion flaws in Nerf design, like some of the supermaxx line, which had structural integrity issues in several places. I do see the similarity to ball launchers though.

That was what I was saying, but thanks for clarifying, my description was just the low-res video. I thought that possibly the suction cup headed darts could seal the barrel, but wouldn't allow it to launch.

Ok, I removed the idiot part, he's not good at TV, but he did service.

The only value in a nerf tube mag is a lot of darts fired in succession. I've tried a lot with tube mag, including firing one dart at a time.I ended up with a NF that fired 15 ft, but for the most part, automatic and unreliable. I can imagine the basics of this kind of system, but not without many valves and a heavy chunk of pvc/cpvc/whatever else it might be made of. Possible, but I think it's more trouble than its worth. Although, many times that kind of philosophy has been shot down, burned, and stepped on, and pissed on, while we all congratulate the nerf pioneer.

And that completes my daily dose of writing!

The only gun that I have seen that fires more than one shot out of the barrel without any moving parts is the AC-MAG ballgun from the Demolition Man toyline. It will fire all five balls if you hold down the trigger or one at a time if you quickly depress the trigger, just like the Wildfire. A concept like the MetalStorm could only be simulated with ballguns in Nerf, in my opinion.

By the way Hersh, you are in the military's radar until you turn 34 years old. Don't worry though, once they hear that you know me, they will avoid you like the plague.
