I have literally spent an hour trying to get these working last night after I posted and don't see how this thing can propell darts 25'+....

You have to figure out exactly how to get the most out of the force the frisbee has when it unfolds.

I also do not think that these mines, although effective in design, are feasible for anyone to mass-produce. The CDs and springs would add costs that would skyrocket prices for consumers, plus it wouldn't be pleasant for the person shelling out the money to buy the supplies in the first place.

It took a bit of research but I'm slowly finding sources for JUST the packaging (100 disc cakeboxes) and the average price for them is $1.10 each.

So
+ 100ct cakebox = $1.10
+ 25 #8-32 threaded rods = $6.64 - 95475A338
+ 100 #8 nylon spacers = $7.37 - 94639A401
+ 100 #8-32 hex nuts = $2.30 - 90760A009
+ AR-15 Carbine spring = $3 (not sure what length I need to cut it to just yet)

+ PETG tube = $1.50 for 6 feet - 9245K15
+ 2 Junk CDs = free

Total = $30

Number of mines made with supplies = atleast 4
Cost per mine = $7-$9

Anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on your ability and tools.
You only have to cut some plastic tube to 2-inch lengths and drill a whole bunch of holes in order to get the thing working.

Well the prototype is made. Mixed results after a few hours of testing.

Shown here loaded with 32 darts. 24 darts ended up working better.



Not sure if I'm happy with it. It's amusing, but the spread is only 6 feet. Granted, that's the spread if it's sitting on the ground. It improves a good deal when it's at chest level. In a few days I might try making a pole base to see if a tiki-torch version will give a decent blast radius. If not then I'll have to start over from scratch.

Well I guess you could set it on a ledge instead. I'm not really happy with it's performance at the moment. The rubber bands simply can't throw the darts very far.

I had a good idea for camoflague.

Make the mine on a pole like a tiki and then make it look like a lamp. That would be stealthy if you were nerfing and you told your friend to turn on the light and he gets shelled with stefans!

Yes, I wouldn't be suspicious at all of a lamp post. out in the middle of somewhere where there shouldn't be a lamp post. However, CS's idea of on a ledge is good, as it is way better concealed.

One problem. How do you get it down? With an adhesive that is weak enough to take down, the inertia of the top of the mine flying downwards will bring the entire mine towards the floor and could hit someone in the head. It would have been a good idea, though.

I'm not happy with this thing. I have a completely different design in mind now, but i think I'll spend more of my time in the next few months working on CSHG.

The fact that the lid and base won't go flying apart is why the mine would come down. Even though the lid will be stopped, the energy that the spring gave it while pushing down will continue to carry the entire module down, and most likely rip apart the adhesive's bond, peeling the paint from the ceiling and leaving residue behind, not to mention posing a threat to anyone directly below the mine.

Anyways, the idea seems good, but the design just isn't practical. If it worked (in place of a better word) better, it would seem worth pursuing, but a lot of your other projects look infinitely more promising.

That's just my opinion though, so I now possess flaming immunity.

I agree. This is a half failure. It worked, but not well enough to merit further development.
I have a pneumatic land mine idea that I will work on at a later date.

The concept is solid. Its the rubber bands that are lacking in the acceleration of the darts.

If you could get a circular case that was larger in diameter it might work better. A larger case would mean more room for the rubber bands to stretch, meaner better acceleration and range.

I'd also look into stronger rubber bands.

If I were you I wouldn't give up yet.
