[TED]

I recently acquired a crossbow shell. The previous user must have covered it in duct tape and now it looks like garbage due to all the sticky crap. Is there a good way to remove this stuff without damaging or discoloring the plastic?

I bet Goo Gone would do the trick. I've been meaning to get me some of this but havn't had the time.

WD-40 eats away at rubber, and SOME plastics, if left on the surface, wet. As in used for lubrication, for a long period of time.

I use WD-40 to remove all kinds of things; gum off of the bottom of tables and desks (a common occurrence in my lines of work), tape residue from anywhere, I use it to clean gummy o-rings caked in dirty silicone lube and moving parts of blasters (like the Expand-a-Blast and Sharpshooter II).

But I remember afterward to re-lube everything with silicone spray. That's the key.

It's not like WD-40 is an ultra-powerful solvent that will melt away plastic. I think that PVC purple primer is about as close as you can get to that. But WD is a pretty good overall plastic cleaner. Just make sure you wash off the parts in water after you clean them. And of course, lube the moving parts.


EDIT: Goo Gone is great too. Treat it like WD-40.

I think "Guardsman's Goof-Off" would work as well, but I don't know how it reacts (if at all) with plastics.

Also, I second the goof off. It works well for me. It has gotten all kinds of adhesives of of plastic for me including tape residue. By the way Ted, if you are talking about an LCM xbow, you would be wiping away HISTORY! How could you?

"Pimp cane" is better. Watch this X-Men-based vid and you'll see. (I will warn you, there are some parts you probably shouldn't watch with your parents around, plus you only need to watch the first minute-and-a-half.)

For me, rubbing alcohol and paper towel is good, but don't rub too hard or the colour will start to come off.

If by any odd chance those don't work, maybe give some nail polish remover a shot. The acetone may just take care of that. I've used it in some instances and it works for certain substances...
