I was wondering how many of you have played or plan on playing Gears of War for the XBox 360. I've had it for a couple weeks, and it kicks ass!

I have it. Put it this way. The game is so good that you can literally kill people with a chainsaw. You Can chop heads off and murder the shit out of people...

It's good, but not without its flaws.

I haven't bought it, but I have played it at my friend's house.

It is pretty cool. The actual game is too short, but the 26 player online is amazing!

This game is awesome! I really have to play it more though. You have a chainsaw bayonet; tell me that's not the definition of badass.

They aren't weapons. Don't call them weapons. They're only weapons if you make them so.

The game is okay in my opinion. But I think it gets boring FAST. After you've played the game a few times,, it seems like you kill people the same exact way every time.

Some people compare this game to Halo2. And I just laugh.

Halo 2>>>Gears of war.

Do you guys have xbox live? What's your gamertag?

I totally agree. A lot of people, including the developers of this game, trumpeted it as being very open ended and totally based on user initiative and personal style. But honestly, after playing the game through more than once on single-player, the game is rather limited in its approach. It feels fairly linear most of the time.

Gears of War's only real replay value is in its co-op play. But even then, that blows by even quicker than the regular single player due to the fact that you have 2 people playing who have a clue.

Good try, Effeminate, I'll certainly play GoW2, but I'm still not that impressed by the next-gen.

I should be getting XBox Live soon...

Gears of War:

Pros:
+ Chainsaw bayonet
+ Graphics that could make your eyes bleed if not properly prepared to witness them
+ New focus on taking cover and maneuvering rather than other run&gun games
+ Torque Bow
+ Active reloads
+ Intelligent AI
+ Great Co-op

Cons:
- Poor storyline
- The game is short
- General RAAM is a bitch on insane difficulty
- Narrow field of enemies to encounter
- Fairly linear gameplay
- Not as fun single-player

P.S.: The first level where you find a Torque Bow (the Imulsion Pumping Station), I picked up the bow and got headshots with it for the rest of the level.

Have it, beat the single player campaign and thouroughly enjoyed it :) . My only gripe about this game is that like many other very good games it was to short. Just as I has sunk my teeth in the credites were rolling.

  • I played it for a day or two when my buddy left his Xbox 360 over here, so I'll add this to the thread...
  • as much as it's fun to feel so "tactical" rolling around, jumping over and posting up behind different walls using EXCLUSIVELY the A-button, it's oh-so-much a pain in my posterior to stick to every wall I run by when I'm holding A to crouch-dash (the only way to speed up movement (didn't this guy CliffyB make Unreal Tournament?).
The walls practically grab you and the only button to control that is ... A.
  • it becomes like every other game, a rush for the power weapons... if they have a eat shit rifle and you don't, you're screwed because they will sit on top of a box somewhere and eat shit you where your innacurate rifle can't do enough damage to bring them down permanently. Where's my Halo 1 pistol?
  • host is a huge issue, especially when it comes to close combat fighting. If the net code stutters for even half a second, they will be behind you chainsawing you or punching a grenade into your body. Whoever has the better connection often gets the benefit of a quicker melee attack AKA instant death.
  • The only positives I will mention that haven't been said yet are that there are a lot of possible hours of enjoyment to be derived from putting together a squad who uses voice chat effectively and co-ordinating assaults. The game is definately manuevering-centric so I'm looking forwards to making the best of that. I like that there is limited to no auto-aim as far as I can tell. Don't let the noobs use the eat shit rifle like they might in Halo 2. Oh, and one more thing; PLANETARY LASERS! Yes, the Resonator or "Hammer of Doom" allows you to bring down a strategic laser from an orbiting satellite to wreck havoc upon your enemies. Badass.

I think you mean the Hammer of Dawn.

As for the "sticking to walls" problem, I've had few instances where this was a nusiance and fewer times when it was fatal. Once you have insomnia for two nights playing Gears, you get to be a master of the control scheme.

Regardless of experience with the game it is still relatively easy to get "hooked" onto the wall at an inopportune time.

I really like it, but yeah they need to make the second one longer. Oh and not delay the release...

Where the hell did Rainbow Six? come from?

Anyway, I would think that the second one (this is a trilogy) would be longer because the designers are listening to the comments about their game. However, we can also play online until the second one comes out. As for the delay, the first one took ten years to make, but the second should take substantially less now that theyhave most of the old work done. (Weapons and characters are already programmed...)

I'm saying that I think RS6(The newer ones) has a very similar sort of defense system. I.e. how you cover, etc.

If you compare gameplay, then you have to compare grapics as well, and Gears is so head-and-shoulders above all the other games for any other system that everything else before this game looks like Pong or Pac-Man in comparison.
