I just got 3/4 inch and 1 1/4 inch PVC to go over my 1/2 barrel. I know I drill holes in the 3/4 inch PVC but do I also drill holes in my barrel itself? Also, how long should my silencer for my nitefinder be? It has a three inch barrel on it. Only about two inches are sticking out of the gun though. Thanks.

Why would you want to silence a NF? Anyway, if you drill holes in the barrel then obviously air will escape, which will keep the pressure from accelerating the dart. What you need to do is keep the barrel solid, and then have your silencer attach to the end and extend farther out. As for length, you only really need about a three inch long silencer for that small volume of air.

Put foam on the end of your plunger head, that will decrease the sound of the impact therefore making it quieter.
We should stop calling out/making fun of/pissing GC off. He's actually contributed and is available for trade. He's a better than average member no doubt. Got your back Cole.

The kind of silencer you plan on making will not work very well on a spring gun. It would work however on an air gun.

Sam I think it will. The "POP" you hear when you fire a spring gun is the sudden release of pressure from behind the dart. The silencer slows down the pressure wave from that air. Imagine the difference between popping a balloon and letting the air out slowly.

It may work a tiny tiny bit, but most of the noise coming from a springer, in this case a NF, is from the spring bouncing around, and from the plunger head hitting the end of the plunger tube.
If you want to silence a your NF put foam on the plunger head, on bothe the front and back sides of it. It sohuld cancel most noise.

I second that. Silencers work best for air guns, foam plunger heads for springers.

I have done that. The clanging noise is gone. I want that pop gone now from the dart exiting the barrel. I made a silencer by putting 3/4 inch with holes in it over the barrel and then wrapped it in cloth and then put 1 1/4 over that. It doesn't work. The pop is still there. Can anyone explane what I did wrong?

Did you drill holes in your barrel?

Silencers work by bleeding off pressure from behind the dart gradually, instead of letting it all escape at once at the end. In other words, they reduce the pop at the expense of range. (And typically, like everyone else is saying, it's a problem on air guns, not springers.)

Really, if you're getting that much pop, consider lengthening your barrel; you have some extra pressure you're not making use of.

I asked if I should drill holes in the barrel before. People said it would cause me to lose too much pressure.

Yeah, it will. But it'll get rid of the pop ;)

As you've found, just wrapping the barrel without vent holes will do exactly nothing. You'll have to strike a balance with what you're looking to do: reduce the pop (and reduce your range) or deal with the pop, and keep your range. More holes = less pop. The more you add, the more pop reduction you'll get. You'l also get more range reduction. Experiement.
