I saw it, and I was bored the entire time. It was terrible. I think it really lost me around the TEN MINUTE TIME LOOP THING. What the hell. Why does everyone say this is so good?

One of the reasons that it is so well known is that it is like the movie that defined todays science fiction genra. If you think that this movie is confusing try watching "the twelve monkeys" now that is a confusing film!(but also one of my favs ;) )

It's not that it defined sci fi, but elevated it. 2001 is thick with symbolism and satire that may not be readily apparent. It's certainly not an action movie. Also, the final sequences aren't quite as mind blowing today to a society set on permenant fast forward - or one that's seeing the movie on a small screen.

Yeah, I saw it on a TV. The parts where stuff happens are fine, (after the monkeys dancing for ten minutes and before the ten minute time loop) but the rest is boring as hell.

Read the book, then you'll get it.

Clarke wrote the book while he was working on the script with Kubrick. I think they are both better when viewed as companions to eachother.

One of my favorite stories, but I too find it hard to stay awake during the symphony portion.

I cannot believe you. Have you no appreciation for the classics? Did you even notice the subtle strategies and stark realism that the movie employed? Have you read the book? 2001 is personally one of my favorite movies. It was made in 1968! Do you understand what a breakthrough the movie was? And you haven't seen the movie until you watch it is HD wide screen, it is incredible. Watch it again and keep in mind when it was made. Keep in mind that the things done is that movie had never been done before. You are probably one of the kids that only enjoy the movies of today. Short, sexy, violent, and mindless films that are the only thing that will hold today's generation's 10 second attention span.

I've had a picture of David Bowman as my myspace pic for months...

I hate it when kids these days don't like classics because they are not action packed.
