I realize this has been brought up many times in random threads in the past, and Pineapple's "who are you" thread was pretty similar to this, but I thought it would be good to have a single thread in which people could say what Nerf means to them. For me it's probably "On the Verge of Becoming an Obsession." I am curious as to what other members of NH think of it as. I've heard people say all kinds of things from the first choice to the last and wanted to know from some people what Nerf really meant to them. Sorry if this is a stupid thread, but it seems valid to me since, althought it's been brought up in the past, there wasn't really a thread about it and nothing else.

So vote please!

Well, I'd say it's my favorite hobby, I mean, it beats like....Chain smoking...Or ummm...Heroin...
I love NERF becasue it gives me the chance to Stretch my Proto-MEchanical Engineer mind. Lets be build abstractly. Plus its really really fun.

I have two hobbies, Bodybuilding and Nerf. The two go hand in hand in the sense of taking something and making it stronger, better looking, more functional, and with proper work both can be shown off with pride.

It is my favorite hobby because it challenges the mind and really alows a person to be creative with parts, ammo functions etc. There are so many things you can do to a nerf gun. There is a certain pride in being the first one to post a new unique mod. Such as the ABBB, the FAR and all of BS's other works, the Rapid fire that was modified to shoot over 90 rounds, and many more I have forgotten. The only thing I dont like about the hobby is the fact that it really hasnt grown to what I would like it to be yet. That and It seems impossible to get a decent sized war going in the greater Toronto area. I have yet to go to a war so I think thats why I am discouraged in this case. If there were people other than myself and Hexen in Mississauga that modified nerf guns I am sure I would enjoy it more.

I don't get my kicks out of you,
I don't feel the way I used to do.
I know its bad,
After what we had,
But I’m just not the angel you knew.

Unhealthy obsession...for sure

I started an ebay store devoted to Nerf, I have way too many Nerf guns, and thats all I do other than work.

NerfMonkey, I do think this is a valid thread and I interested to see what peoples votes are.

For me, NERF would have to be an unhealthy obsessision. But yet, I don't feel that it's "unhealthy", I love every minute of it.

Nerf is my favorite hobby and it keeps out of trouble with the law and my parents so its pushin a unhealthy obsession.

I do far too many things for Nerf to become my main hobby or an unhealthy obsession.

Whoops, forgot to add that one. :D

Shindig, I totally understand the whole real life thing. I assume your vote is either not on there or for "Something to Do."

Nerf is a replacement for my stolen Xbox. Actually, my nerfing side took over when my Xbox was lost, and in a way, it saved me from becoming a tomato (Best Friends Forever, Southpark episdoe) . Nerf is 1/4 of my life, till the day the world ends or when I die, go to heaven and find out that they only have the original nerf foam balls on the shelves  . Of course, if that's the case, I'll just have to make a trip to the holy hardware store.

For me, it's a distraction.

I mean, with a full-time job, a wife, two kids, volunteer ministry work, and the management of a six acre compound, the last thing I need is something to compete with what little free time I even get, with;
  • Fishing, my number 1 hobby
  • Building two full-sized boats, one from scratch
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Transload Virtual Airlines
  • Acoustic (slack key) guitar
  • Hot rodding my golf cart
  • Reading one good (secular) book a month.
So why do I do it?

Because it's so much FUN!

Truthfully, if it weren't for my kids' interest in Nerf, I'd be gone, long ago. It wouldn't be the same.

No chance of that happening. My kids already saved up more than half for their Magstrikes.

For me it is "something to do". I get kind of confused, Is a sport a hobby? If it is , then Nerf is not my favorite hobby. I just nerf when I feel like it.

Cheif wins, hands down.

These days, for me and my friends, NERF is just somthing to do. When we dont feel like being all geared up for airsoft or want to run around but not play a sport, we always opt for NERF.

NERF is something to do for me in my spare time, although in some ways its like a second hobby to me behind Super Soakers. It sort of bonds in between everything I like doing in my personal life.

It's coming close to an obsession. The only things keeping me from buying every damn nerf related item on ebay is

1. Somewhere out there is a crossbow under 70 fuckin' bucks!
2 CXWQ's high bids.
