Yeah, okay, I know that this is ridiculous, and it goes against any sort of mod wisdom I've ever seen. Every bit of advice says "Don't just remove the pegs, you have to remove the restrictors." Yet I have a mod that goes entirely against that... I also know that, as a person who has no clout in the mod community, you really have no reason to believe me. And without any real photographs (my digital camera was legitimately broken by a woman taking our picture at a wedding recently) there's little evidence that what I'm saying is true.
This mod originated recently when I was modding my friend's Firefly. After getting the damn thing open and I removed the cylinder, I found the turret virtually impossible to open. I didn't want to break it, and since the main goal was to use stefans, I decided to try something new - leave the cylinder together and hammer out the pegs through the air holes in the back. Using a perfectly fitted flathead, I removed some pegs. The range increase was actually shocking, since the thing had trouble shooting across his living room beforehand.
(All stats INCLUDE dart skip - therefore, for actual range, it's probably best to subtract a few feet, especially for the stefans. Also, all ranges are taken on a 45 degree-ish angle.)
Using stock micros:
Min: 35'10"
Max: 40'10"
Average range: 38'9"
Using stefan darts:
Min: 50'11"
Max: 70'4"
Average: 60'
Pretty impressive, though I have seen just as good or better for the Firefly. I know the difference between the stefans is pretty big - the reason is probably inconsistencies in the darts, not differences in the barrels, since the micros themselves were clustered very tightly.
Anyhow, since the mod proved rather risk-free and beneficial (as I said, the main goal was to use cheaper stefans, not a massive overhaul), I decided to try it on my sister's Maverick. I'd already had a less-than-pleasant experience modding my own, since the gap between barrel and back part is so large that it's hard to seal well.
Using the same screwdriver (the holes are the same size) I performed the mod without even opening the Mav up, simply swinging the cylinder out. The results are entirely unbelievable - really, if I wasn't the one firing the gun, I wouldn't believe it myself.
Firing stock darts:
Min: 47'3"
Max: 51'
Average: 49'7"
Firing stefan darts:
Min: 60' (I removed this from the average, since it's an extreme outlier and doesn't fit the rest of the data. I'm pretty sure that this is dart-based. My darts are fairly inconsistent, since it was pretty much my first batch of micros.)
Min (adjusted): 70'
Max: 85'5"
Average: 80'
Interestingly, the darts hover more around the upper levels than the lower ends. Most mods claim an increase of 5-10 feet, but mine definitely surpasses that with almost no effort and virtually no risk. My belief is that poking the holes through the discs increases the air flow while keeping the lower portion of the barrels fuller, allowing more pressure to build behind the dart. The only mod I've seen comparable in function is Dragonteuthis's Mav mod in which he filled the lower parts of the barrels with an expandable foam, but he never got statistics. My darts are also a tad thicker than more stock darts, so they fit very tightly, probably helping the range. Yea for Home Depot foam!
I haven't seen any Maverick stats surpass the ones I achieved, but if there's better mods, I would like to see them, since most don't include any information besides "it only improves distance 5-10 ft." If I had to make a PTG guesstimate, I'd judge about 40' to 50' with stefans, but I don't have any hard stats for that. Anyhow, for a quick, risk-free mod, it worked out really well, and I'm pretty pleased.

Half-hearted Mav Mod... Gone Awesome?
Darn, I really didn't expect this to work well.

As you suspected, I have trouble believing those ranges. Are you using really tight fitting stefans? How are you measuring ranges? Also, this could be another reason for very long distances on your stefans:
People usually test their gun's range with both flat shots and angled shots. Angled shots are basically despiration shots to me if your using a small spring pistol, whereas flat shots give people a better idea how effective a gun is going to be in a war.
I'm not knocking your mod, I'm just asking you to get some flat ranges and inform us how you are measuring.

If this is the same Master Yogurt from the super soaker forums, please come back! You probably won't know me, though. I joined a bit after you left.
Nice mod. I'll have to try that on my FireFly.

Welcome to the forums! Also congratulations on your first post not being laced with grammatical issues.
Anyway, this is believable if you took the mav shots at a 45* angle. Unless otherwise noted, we take shots with as little angle as possible. Try shooting your gun flat and post the results. If you did shoot the gun flat, then great work!

This is called a screwdriver it is used to unscrew or screw in screws.

Yeah, I didn't remember to take flat measurements at the parking lot I was in - I think my friend was getting rather anxious to leave at the time, so I wanted to hurry it up. I'll get flats as soon as I possibly can, though, since it was rather stupid of me not to take them. Of course angled are entirely worthless in true battle. While I didn't get any exact measurements, and I'm working off of memory, I recall the few flats I took beat out some of my friend's angled FF with stefan darts - therefore, around 50'. Still fairly impressive for a mav, though not as cool in the way of numbers. And, yes, I did measure each exactly, using the distance of a parking space and simple multiplication, with a tape measure for the details. I would have done it at my school's football field, but the school's crazy about "weapons in school" and has some nebby neighbors with nothing better to do than call the cops at the first sign of "suspicious" activity, so I just had to deal with a greater dart skip, unfortunately.
Yes, chances are very high that I'm the same Master Yogurt from either SSI or Super Soaker Central, though I left the forums a while ago. I may happen back occassionally, though I find I prefer Nerf. Of course, Pennsylvania from about October to May isn't exactly conducive to Super Soakers, and June is still pushing it. Plus, Super Soakers are rather dying in power, while Nerf guns are at least staying the same (or actually getting better, judging by the PowerClip rebirth...) I'm really not into making my own Super Soaker, and there's not so much you can do with them, so my interest is rather lax. Nerf has a lot of potential and a lot of room for creativity, so it's far more interesting. Plus it's a lot cheaper, too.
And, yes, if those were flat ranges, I wouldn't believe it myself. That would be too good to be realistic. Also, I hate grammar errors myself, and I've been frequenting forums for five years now, so I would hope my grammar would be good.
I just wish more people would post in coherent English.

No need to worry about the coherency of posts here. If a member starts posting using AOL-style punctuation and shorhand, they're chewed out pretty good. Of course, exceptions are made for international members, like 3DBBQ and that German guy.

I'm sorry Yogurt, but for the life of me, I can NOT figure out what you mean by 'hammering them out' from the back. How would you do that without completely destroying it?
I could understand mabye drilling from the back, but not HAMMERING. I just don't understand. Could you please clarify?
Thanks!

You take a flathead screwdriver with a small head and insert it into the holes in the back of the Mav's turret, where the air flows through. Then take a hammer and hit the screwdriver until it breaks through the restrictor, plastic circle and breaks the peg off. Remove the screwdriver and move on to another hole, though turning the screwdriver 90 degrees and hammering again may result in a better, more symmetrical airflow.
You don't just hit the back of the turret with a hammer; you use a screwdriver as a wedge. The only thing that breaks is exactly what you want to break, the air restrictors inside the gun and the peg preventing you from using stefan darts.
