Ok, so I'm laying in bed and can't really sleep...

I'm thinking of the old Nerf Arena Blast days and when I was admin at Nerf Online. I'm thinking of how great that game was and it hits me... does it still have players? A quick yahoo search brings up a small community of maybe 50 players still playing it. Then an idea... what about a mod for it? Update the graphics, new gun models, sound, bleh, bleh...

I talked to my buddy, and he's already started on it. He said something about using the Source engine that was used with CS:S, HL2, and DoD:S. I've already drawn up the weapons:

Pistols
Nite Finder (Glock)
Tech Target (H&K USP)
Lock N' Load (Sig Compact)
Sharpshooter 2 (IMI Desert Eagle)
Dual Mavericks (Beretta 92s)

Automatics
Wildfire/Rapid Fire 20 (Fabrique Nationale P90)
Power Clip (Steyr TMP and Ingram Mac 10)
Razorbeast (Fabrique Nationale M249)
Chainblazer (H&K Mp5)
Arrowstorm (H&K UMP45)

Rifles
AirTech 3000 (Famas F1)
Bolstsniper's F.A.R. (Colt M4A1 (duh!))
Sawtooth (IMI Galil)
Starbuck/Noid's T-26 Carbine (Avtomat Kalashnikova 47)
AirTech 2000 (Steyr AUG)
SuperMaxx 500 (Sig SG552 Commando)
Crossbow with magazine (H&K G3)
Big Bad Bow with tube magazine (Sig SG550)
SuperMaxx 5000 (Steyr Scout)
Artemis Arms Mountain Rifle/Titan (Accuracy International AWM)

Upgrades and ammo
Brass and CPVC barrels
Micro Stefans
Mega Stefans

It's a lot, but this is all in the works. I'm looking for model makers and skinners. Two of us can't do this together. If anyone is interested, please contact me. Thanks.

Not knowing too much about modding, aleast of the source engine, would .max files be of any use, because if they would then I could be of some use. That is to say, assuming . max files can be converted into what ever the source engine uses then I would be willing to help out.

I could also help maybe, if .ma/.mb (Maya) files could be used. I'm semi-good at modeling/texturing stuff.

I wish to join with you on this, If you can send me whatever files need fixed (names, knockout messages, etc.) I can have them done by tomorrow. I have one question, however. Will the pvc and brass, and such other things improve the damage? You need to add the mav, it belongs in this game. :P
Anyways, can I get in on this? I would love to help out.

Dual Mavericks (Beretta 92s)

He's already going to...

I'm sorry that I can be of no use to this project ('95 computer), but I wish you good luck.

The C.S.H.G. would be a nice add on :P

My friend, who is a 3D artist (and gets regularly paid for special projects) might be able to help with modeling if I give him the actual gun. But thats only around 3 or 4 of the guns :P . I'll ask him about it, he might just do it out of the kindness of his heart.

You guys might consider consolidating your engines, and all using blender. From my experiance, it is easier than Maya to use and is about as powerful. And is $7000 cheaper, at free. It is open source, and works on all computers; my old (think origional style) imac actually runs it faster than my Toshiba laptop, despite the 1 ghz speed difference. And it only takes 30 megs of ram while running, Maya takes 60 at idle.

So ShadowSniper you got the student version, right?

I may be entirely wrong (It's not a good idea to surf the interweb while slightly inebriated and with a pounding headache), but isn't the Supermaxx 500 a pistol? A rather small pistol, at that? Maybe you labeled it wrong, but I could've sworn that old Larami pistol we've got is a Supermaxx 500.

However, I may be wrong. The stickers fell off a long time ago, so I've no idea what it really is called. All I know is that we've got an old Larami pump pistol, and we call it the Supermaxx 500.

Although you're probably right and I'm just a drunken idiot.

On a side note, would all the cocking and pumping and reloading be animated? Cause off the bat that sounds like a pretty big project considering how many guns you've got listed. Meh. Someone here probably has the computer aptitude to pull it off.

Well, good luck with this project. If it turns out as good as it sounds I may have to take it up myself.

EDIT: Wait... Some of the guns you've got listed are already modded (IE. T-26 Carbine is a modded SM1K, Crossbow w/ Magazine is obviously modded, etc.) How would being able to upgrade with CPVC or Brass improve pre-modded guns? Or would that only work for certain guns?

Also, would the damage system be changed to one-shot kills no matter the strike zone? Cause in Nerf it's generally one-hit elims.

What about the sounds? Would you just record these guns firing? Would that even work?

And what about the whole micro vs. mega thing? You have listed as an upgrade mega stefans and micro stefans? Would each gun have two versions: micro and mega, or would certain guns be mega-only, and certain be micro-only?

Sorry about all the questions. I'm just mulling this over in my mind and thinking how cool it'd be, but also how weird it might turn out.

Whatever. I'm out for now.

Pat

It gave the site a sort of 'homy' feeling.

Did you know that "m" can sometimes look like "rn" when read quickly?

That's supposed to be SuperMaxx 1500, not 500. Didn't notice my typo.

The loading and stuff is being drawn up. I'm not entirely sure as of this moment how it will work, but I gurantee something is being worked on.

The mods will be available to guns it applies to.

The damage will depend upon what type of dart hits you. Megas obviously do more damage, yet have less range whereas micros fly forever, but pack a smaller punch. As far as one shot one kill, that would be rediculous in my opinion.

All weapons will have a specific ammo type.

The sounds aren't even on the drawing board yet.

I'm glad to see you all have taken a keen interest in this. I'll keep you posted.

You could also add the Longshot/Magstrike eventually, assuming that this isn't finished by then.

You guys might consider consolidating your engines, and all using blender. From my experiance, it is easier than Maya to use and is about as powerful. And is $7000 cheaper, at free. Even if it did work with my computer, I only have 41 meg of RAM left, and I need that space to run other programs -_-

If this project takes a few years, I'll be able to help because I'll have a new computer by then.

I have a copy of Nerf Arena Blast sitting on my desk in front of me as I type. I think it's an ingenious idea but haveing no knowledge of how to create/edit games or their engines, I'm not much use to you. However, I think there are others like me who would greatly appreciate the effort put into a NAB mod.

Just a sidethought, how hard would it be to do it on Halo Custom Edition (for PC by the way)? Halomaps.org has tons of user created maps and weapons tags, so I know its possible to "create" guns in Halo. It also might be easier to incorporate reload graphics when making the mods, since reloading is a basic part of the Halo game.

I have a problem with this, though. It wouldn't really be cool, or even nerf anymore if we start renaming the weapons so drastically. I can just change it in my copy, but I reccomend leaving the real names out of it. Anyways, good luck. Pm me if you need anything. *knows he is ignoring my posts, but the hell with it*

Thanks again.

Actually, I have access to the unlimited one. (School comps) I was thinking maybe I could stay after school and make a few things on my own time. I'll work on making a nightfinder or something later if I get the chance.

What?

Who's renaming weapons? Unless I understand this wrong, what's going on is we're taking a game with guns in it, and remodeling the guns to look like familiar Nerf products. The name on the left is a Nerf gun we're going to put in-game. The gun on the right is the current gun it will be replacing.

The phrase:

AirTech 2000 (Steyr AUG)

Means we're going to remodel the Steyr AUG to be an AirTech 2000. We're taking a game with the AUG in it, and making it a game with the AT2K in it.

Unless of course I don't understand this project at all and I'm completley dillusional.

Maybe Starbuck could drop some clarification?

Oh, and yeah, the Supermaxx 1500 makes more sense. But then again, it doesn't: it's effectivley the same gun as the AT2K, but they're both included? I kinda though redundancy would be bad. Like putting in a Larami Supermaxx 2000, and putting in a Nerf Supermaxx 5000: basically the same gun.

Oh well. That's just my oppinion.

Well, good luck with this project, everyone. Hope it turns out well, whatever it is you're actually doing.

you could try the forums at role-play.us, they have pretty immature people but they have good modelers and skinners that wonder the forums.

I think it would be cool to start out with a smaller scale project that works towards the same goal. Nerf replacement models for CS:S. What do you think?

Ok, I'm going to update everyone:

As of right now, we're working on the models. I've had school work and I'm going to the state track meet next week to throw discus, but I've managed to start modeling pistols. No textures yet.

I'm thinking right now, that this is going to start out as a gun skin pack for CS:S to whet everyone's appetite, but as I get going, we'll start our own scripting. I found a hold out of about 50 original NAB players from when I was big into the game and they're psyched and are ready to help.

To answer questions:

Are you going to put the game on a site so everyone online can play it if you make it?

Yes, once we're done, I'll upload it to the Artemis Arms website once both are complete and it'll be on there for all to enjoy.

Well, in a CS:S sense, the Steyr AUG and the Sig 552 Commando is pretty much the same gun, aye? They both are full auto and they have zoome capabilities. Well, the SM1500 and the AT2k are two different guns with similar qualities, range and several shots. I was just trying to get the details right in this rough draft.

Thanks for the interest. Look for more updates and pictures of model rendering soon!

I think this is a great idea, but wouldn't it make more sense to make the Firefly the p90? It's kind of similar to it. Just an idea.

Making a CS:S mod seems like a great plan to me. The source engine is so accepting of development and modification. The gun physics are all there, free to modify as you create new weapons which can accurately model nerf. A whole library of counterstrike maps are already available to use with the mod.

It seems there are 2 trains of thought. One is to take every gun seen in CounterStrike:Source and swap it for some equivalent nerf gun, leaving the gun physics as they were. The other is to forget about what CounterStrike has and define one's own, original gun physics to accompany the weapon models. This second notion seems more logical if the steam engine is to be used.

As for other fps mods, Halo CE is considerably easier to create new weapons for, I believe, since there is much less to account for in comparison to the source engine's intricacy. I've personally played a Zelda:OOT mod which was awesome; it had hyrule field as the map, and even the hookshot was a weapon. However, the Halo CE experience, in my opinion, is inferior to a source mod's fuition.

I'm hoping something is truly done with this project, instead of it being another thread in the pile of ambitious but never tried ideas.
