Hello, I recently got a crossbow and have been meaning to mod it. I extended the barrell, but it is a little off, to the right, so I went to home depot for something to hold it in place. I got this foam stuff call Great Stuff that expands and dries out of the bottle. All I did was put a little on the front and then held the barrel straight for an hour while I watched a movie. When it was done, the barrel was exactly how I wanted it. Also, Since it doesnt stick to plastic, you can take apart the gun easily without having to re-do it. And since it is so strong, if you hit your barrel when in a war, it wont break off the chamber. Lastly, this stuff is good because it can be used in every hole in the gun to decrease noise, making it a silencer material... This Stuff is Great!!!

ha ha, I get it...

"This stuff is great..."
"Great Stuff..."

*Shut up*

Great find! I may look into finding some of this. I don't like stuffing FBR into the front of my Sf to keep the barrels secure in holster, etc. How much does it expand? Are we talking spraying a marble-sized glob of it and watching it expand to [exaggeration for emphasis]two feet[/exaggeration for emphasis] or would the same amont maybe just double in size?

Thanks! I can think of a number of things people could do with this. I recall some people posting about some stuff like this before, but I don't think it was that particular brand. I could be wrong, though...

A marble wold most likely double or get 175% greater. I have also thought of spraying SHI*T load of this stuff into the gun, letting it dry, then removing the parts which stop the motion of the gun, then cutting it in two... This would act as an inner protective shell and silencer. then the plastic shell would go over this because it was molded to it.

-It costed $4.17 for me at home depot, but it probably differs. the can is big so it is a great deal... I used up about 2% on my crossbow.

Doesn't stick to plastic, eh? Is anyone other than me thinking about making darts with this stuff? I mean, if you spray it down some PVC/CPVC/PETG, then the dart would be a perfect fit, right? Thanks munson.

Murakamo, I was think the same thing. I think it would work. If it does not stick to plastic it should work right?

munson, Great find i can use this for many things, such as extended barrels and hopefully darts. My barrels are never on strait. do you guys think u could fill other guns?

I had the same thought a couple of months ago and tried it. The foam sticks to the inside of pvc and messes up when you try to get it out. Also, even if it did work, its much more porous (I think I spelled that wrong) than FBR. Just letting you guys know what happened when I tried, it might or might not work for you.

I don't have access to my usual tools right now, or else I'd try this...

I was wondering though, ShadowS said that this stuff sticks to CPVC or PVC when you try to make a dart out of it. Well, what if you lube up your tube with either some grease, olive oil, vegetable oil, pam, wd-40, ANYTHING like that. Or, if you rolled some wax paper into the pipe, then sprayed it, it seems like the paper might come off pretty easily.

As to it being more porous than FBR... I think the point here is that you wouldn't need to worry about straightening it. That's usually the problem with my Stefans, since I'm too lazy to do something about it (although I usually straighten them by leaving them in barrel pipes).

Still though, any takers? I'm pretty fired up about this... but I don't have time/materials to try it out (being in my apartment).

I think I've said this before, but I work at ACE Hardware and we sell this stuff. It comes in three sizes, blue-small holes(for around windows and doors), red-medium, black-large gaps and big holes. Holla! :D

Isn't PVC and all the stuff like it plastic? If we do need to lube the tube (hehehe, lube the tube) then is there a plastic based type of lubricant or can we just use patroleum based? If we can make this work, it may be another jump ahead in nerfing. For example, we can take a 2" piece on barrel material and spray Stuff, drop in a weight, spray Stuff, let dry, remove and trim loose ends. The cool this about this idea is that you can have a grid of pvc in a block of wood, sort of like Renegade's stefan manufacturing thing, but different.

In additon, you could now make darts for all size barrels! This means you can make huge darts or very small darts. This my allow you to mod in brand new ways. Right? This is amazing :w00t: .

Great Stuff seals itself up after about two hours of no usage. So this would be a one shot deal. Also the blue can dries flexible, where as the red and black cans dry rigid.

kirby u gave me a SUPER idea my mom has about 16 cans of this stuff (we are rebuilding the house) the wax paper even if it stuck to the wax paper you could just cut off the excess stuff (waxpaper) and the dart would fill the barrel perfectly I have bought 25 feet of pvc what if I filled the whole tube with wxpaper then i could fill the whole tube and cut the big yellow honkin stick into tiny dart peices according to my calculator and math skills that should be 120 darts just as much as a bag of fbr which is cheaper .......dang oh well if the darts work better than fbr it would be a success

i will write about this if I can make darts success fully

by the way great stuff expands if someone didnt mention this already...

I wouldn't try that if I were you. Simply because it is a cylinder, and a fairly small ID at that, filling a 25 foot length of PVC with this expanding foam would take multiple weeks to dry, if ever!

Simply because the tube is a straight, airtight cylinder, with only two entrances of air 25 feet apart, the foam nearest the ends will dry, making an airtight (or almost airtight) seal in the tube, keeping the other 24 1/2 feet liquid for many, many, many weeks, if not for years.

The way they keep it liquid in the can is they deprive it of air. Putting it in a long, airtight cylinder is effectivley what they do in the first-place to make sure it doesn't dry up until it's apllied to something in an oxygen-rich environment.

I'd suggest cutting lengths of PVC about three-to-five darts long, filling them with this foam, and letting them sit for a week. Keep them outside, or somewhere with MOVING air: DO NOT leave them in a basement unless you have two or more fans set up, plus a de-humidafier.

I tried to make some with the blue can and I was able to get them out by pushing a marker through the bottom of the pvc. The only proplem is that there are air bubbles in the middle of the dart... great great texture other than that, though! :P

I think occasionaly shaking/rotating could solve that problem of air bubbles.

Or, plug one end of the PVC with an endcap, and take something like a tight-fitting dowel rod and compress the foam while it's still wet, hopefully forcing out air bubbles.

However, the problem with this product is that the entire principle of how it works is by forming air bubbles.

So, by forcing out air bubbles, you signifigantly increase drying time, making these darts even harder to make.

The concept is good, but it looks like it'll require more experimentation until it is picked up by the general nerfing populace. Keep it up though: breakthroughs in Nerf technology and techniques depend on people like you experimenting with unique concepts like this.

I think I'll just stick with my Stefan machine, once I finish it. I'll leave expanding foam for silencing my blasters.

That is rather interesting how it can in fact be used to make darts. Pretty much, it looks like open-cell FBR, does it not?

Yes, it does rather look like open cell foam, but it is much more rigid, almost to the point I think it might snap if it hit a hard surface when fired from a powerful gun, like a singled AT3K.

And, indeed, it does work wonders for silencing blasters, as it can mold perfectly to fit around a guns internals, yet take up every crevase not filled by internals.

It's Great Stuff, if I do say so myself.

I just added side panels to my SOBR. I might stiffen them with this stuff if it dries that hard. That'll also help me with quieting down the action (maybe) but more than likely will make the gun more rigid (major plus, even though it is bulit like a tank, minus the suppressor) and make the trigger to actuator rod less noisy. Yes, it can be heard over the firing of the gun. No, that is not because it is really loud; the gun is really quiet.

Edit: I might also fill in some of the holes in the body of my sis' Cherokee. Wind noise on that thing is terrible.

I bet the creators of Great Stuff never planned on it being used like this...for Nerf, at least.
