This is the first in, hopefully, a series of write-ups by Your's Truly. I'm placing this in it's own thread with the intent that it will be easier to find by readers. I will also create a link in the Write-up Directory.

Hmm...what did I do on my Saturday? I made a contribution to the Haven! I've noticed that a common question by newcomers is how to mod their AT2k. My goal in this thread is to provide a detailed how-to on single barrel modding the AirTech 2000. This can be used as a common reference point for those who want to make one. With that said, here she be.

The first step is obviously to open the gun. This picture above shows you how the gun is laid out upon opening. If you, for some reason, are unable to piece things back together, refer to it.

Next, I reinforced the trigger spring with hot glue (if you look closely, you'll notice it). Why? With the increased air pressure your gun will need to handle shortly, the trigger needs to have a more durable spring to pull back the firing pin in the airtank. You may have also heard of placing a piece of BIC pen or a straw here to reinforce, and that works just as well.

This is the point where you may plug the over-pressure release valve in your pump. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of this process so you'll just have to bear with me. Remove your pump from the pump shaft. You will see a little hole at the end of the pump. You want to plug this so more air is injected into the tank. More air = more pressure = More distance = a happier you. To plug this, take a hot glue gun and apply glue to cover the hole. This is a standard procedure in modifying air guns, so if you are confused you may refer to another modification thread.

Barrel replacement. As stated before, this mod is meant to replace the 4 shot turret with one functional barrel. My choice of barrel is a crayola barrel, nested in SCH 40 1/2" PVC. What this means is that you remove the innards of a crayola marker so that a dart may fit inside, and you slide the PVC over the outside to add length to the barrel. The objective of this barrel replacement is to increase barrel length and make a tighter air seal around the dart. I used RoseArt markers for my barrel, as they don't have the same pesky ridges on the inside as Crayola markers do (seen above).

Here's the catch that the veterans will notice. I left the attachment of the marker/marker cap on the barrel. I hollowed out the cap of the marker and it fits snugly over the area where barrel meets airtank. I then stuck the marker into the cap for a snug fit and I wrapped the mechanism with duct tape to make sure it stayed together. For the newer readers, this cap isn't necessary. You may just cut the attaching part off your crayola and fasten that to the tank. I just did this to be original. ^_^

Now you may reassemble the gun. At this point you will slide your SCH 40 1/2" PVC over the marker until it ceases to move. I used a 6 1/2" length of PVC over my crayola.

After you place your barrel, you will notice that it is quite wobbly. Since this would greatly reduce your accuracy in a war, you want to make it a stiff fit. To do so, I took a section of old t-shirt and packed it into the opening above the barrel. I then stuck some hockey tape over it to hold it in. I took more hockey taped and wrapped the barrel at the base just to make sure it stays put.

There you have it: a single barrel AirTech 2000. It is a very simple/basic mod, yet it will perform wonders for you. Hopefully, this was easy enough for you to follow. It was meant to be user-friendly. I ran a range test on the gun and this is what I found:

Trial #1: 97'4"
Trial #2: 88'11"
Trial #3: 89'7"
Trial #4: 95'6"
Trial #5: 91'2"
Average: 92'6"

I paced these distances off and measured by my walking gait and a 12 inch ruler. It was quite cold out too (hi-30s, lo-40s), so if temperature affects its flight, it may go further/shorter come summertime.

Questions, comments, criticism, snide remarks? Let's hear em!

EDIT: Ranges are based off of size 3/0 splitshot weighted stefans.

What type of darts were you using?
I did a at2k mod that worked well, but only with plunger darts, because those darts created a nice rubber seal and built up a large amount of force. Unfortunatly, my stephan ranges were nowhere near as good. About 40' less. ^_^

I'm about to single barrel mod my at2k. Is it possible to use a coupler? Will the coupler fit inside the gun? Let me know...thanks.

Nero - Generally I use szie 3/0 or BB splitshot weighted stefans. Perhaps your stefans are too light, or maybe the weight is off-centered. I know my first batch of stefans had off-center weights and they absolutely sucked.

lilsniper - You could use a coupler to make the mod, but it would involve a slightly lengthier process. When I look at the gun, it seems to me that you would have to take a Dremel to the ridge between the tank and barrel (formerly the groove for your rotating mechanism). Perhaps someone has done so otherwise...

Yeah I did a coupler modification on mine, and you had to cut and trim some of the inside around the air tank.
I wonder what the distances on this are compared to brass or cpvc? Good mod.

Lilsniper, here's a solution. Do the crayola part of this mod, and then measure how far the 1/2" PVC goes into the coupler, and glue that much PVC on the end of the crayola. Then, stick the coupler on that piece of PVC, and It should come out straight. Just put hot glue EVERYWHERE. It's what I did, and it hasn't failed me yet.

Oh my god. I feel so stupid for fogeting to put on a crayola barrel. I just attacheted the coupler directly to the airtank. Thanks Team_Slaya, that should get me a better seal.

i did this mod except i left it as just the roseart barrel, with no pvc over it. my problem is that my homemade micro stefans fit perfecty in the barrel, but with over 2 pumps they just spin out and go 2 feet. do you think my gun is too strong with the plugged release valve, or is it crappy stefans?

The barrel is too short. You need the PVC over the crayola to effectively channel the power behind the dart. Otherwise, the excess power just puffs out as the dart leaves the barrel, causing fishtailing or just spinning out.

It's a valid, well written question regarding the mod, and Rings isn't really around anymore to PM. I would say keeping it in the same thread is better than making a new one.
