I think he is talking about CDTS, not true stefans, which are around .07 cents or whatever.

stefans are expensive :D

That is the most confusing set of 3 words I have every seen on this forum. I made 300 stefans for $12. Anything not made out of foam backer rod isn't considered a stefan.
If you can't afford that then you're definitely going to spaz over the fact that CSHG is costing me around $150 to make. And my sources for materials are much cheaper than those of the average person.

That would make what you did with the stefans expensive, not the stefans themselves. How is the CSHG coming anyway?

I have all the remaining parts figured out, but my body is being uncooperative and haven't been able to work on machining anything. Hopefully I can accomplish something this weekend.

Hey CS, I had my father look at the CAD file and found some flaws. I don't know if he was just retarded that day, but I kind of agree. Could you also make a version that is a lot of parts?

I tried to tell you that the CAD file wasn't complete. I only use it to flesh out the basics and I intentionally avoid relying entirely on the CAD model for dimensions and spacings.
It doesn't include anything that I haven't completely figured out, which is why I was trying to disuade you from trying to take on something this complex. I myself do not have a 100% clear picture of every detail of the finished gun, I simply have a direction I'm heading in and I'm working out the kinks slowly going from piece to piece. I have intentionally avoiding trying to solidify any part of the design, and am instead working outwards from the more complicate components.

The first task is to complete the working self-feeding and breach actuation system. Once that works in a reliable manner I can focus on the rest of the gun.
But unfortunately for me my health has been too poor to make any progress.

After working on a complicated project at work I'm contemplating changing this to a pneumatic gatling gun rather than a spring-plunger gun. The reason being the spring-plungerswill put a considerable load on the motor and will limit my battery life considerably, not to mention the spring plunger system makes the gun twice the size of a potentially pneumatic gun.
I'll decide later after I have the breech system operational since that will end up being the same regardless of how the darts are fired.

A pneumatic version would replace the spring plunger with 3 small 10-psi charge-tanks, trigger valves on an activation cam, an air regulator, and a high volume 150psi supply backpack tank.
My health is still fairly poor at the moment so I haven't been able to do much more than refine the CAD model further.

Not to be disrespectful or overly nosy, but what exactly is wrong? You've said for some time now that health issues have been keeping you from working on this project.

I'm not advocating you over-exerting yourself to finish a Nerf gun for people you've never met. I'm just curious what it is that has been keeping you down.

If you'd prefer not to answer, just ignore I ever posted this.

I have something similar to, but more complicated than rheumatoid arthritis. I get very stiff and painful joints (pretty much all of them), but no swelling/inflammation. I also have ligament and muscle pain.
It's been getting worse since January and it's now to the point that I'm too stiff and uncomfortable to do anything. I had to drop all of my classes this semester, I had to take off from work indefinitely, and all of my time is now occupied with medical appointments, blood work, testing, and being stuck on the couch.
I have had this all my life, but up until this point it was just a mild hinderance that did little more than prevent me from playing sports (or exercising, not that I ever needed to) and made me develop a disdain of barometric pressure changes.

Physically this past week has been the worst of my life. But in terms of being able to obtain everything I have ever wanted out of life, this past month has been the most fulfilling. I have an awesome job, lots of awesome projects to work on, access to lots of tools I never thought I would ever have access to, and I'm almost finished with college. But unfortunately my body has decided that there needs to be an intermission first. So as what I am very versed in having to do, I will just have to be patient until I can figure out what is going on and what to do about it.

I'm glad that you're having fun. I hope you start feeling better soon, for your sake. In my experience, no matter how much happiness is around you, dibilitating physical pain is still a bitch.

Hope you start feeling better before next semester, too. You don't want to miss out on too many classes, do you?

That sucks alot man. My aunt has rheumatoid arthritis, and I see the amount of pain she is in, and if you say this is worse, then I hope it clears up for you real soon. As for the Gatling, it is an awesome project, and I cannot wait to see it finished. Hope you're feeling better soon man.

Hey, CS, I wouldn't mind if you finished this project in a year. You made some good progress on it. That's all that matters. Now on the changes of the design, I see why you also chose to use pneumatics instead of springs and plungers. But anyway, don't worry about it.
My body has not been cooperating with me either, to modify or fix any of my nerf guns. In addition, my calf muscles (back of my lower legs) are extremely soar from running up hills a couple days ago. I'm literally limping around my house :) Hope you get better soon.

I just ordered a cheap pneumatic motor which will allow me to completely ditch the battery and electric motor and then simply drive the entire weapon from a smallish scuba or paintball tank. The emphasis now is on simplification and increased portability. The original weightier design was "cooler" but that's not what I particularly care about. The aim is a self-loading man-portable full-auto nerf gun. Not something so large and cumbersome that it would only be usable as a stationary turret (because that would probably ruin the fun of using this in a war).

And to pass the air lines into the rotating parts I also managed to get a rotary union on ebay for about $12 (they're normally $80+ from mcmaster).
Posted Image
A rotary union acts like a swivel fitting. But it's much more durable and can be bolted onto the end of or inline on a drive shaft.

This also means I will have less work ahead of me. Which I like alot. The air tool I got on ebay will be fairly easy to mount and I will be linking it to the center axle of the gun using a 4:1 chain drive which will only cost about $20.

With all the space saved by the new configuration I should also be able to simply mount the air tanks onto the gun itself. Micodasc got me interested in 20oz paintball tanks which are quite affordable and will be easy to fill using the compressor at work.

With a very clear picture of what I'm doing I should have a completed CAD model tonight or tomorrow.

Way back at NOSPAM (the war in Minnesota) Carrtoon showed up with many of his inventions and creations, one of which (although I don't think it was ever posted) was a gun that was powered by pre-compressed air. he had brought with him (in addition to the guns) a bunch of used pop bottles and an electric pump. He pumped the bottles and then attached them to his gun. With a large bottle he could get off like 23 good shots. Now you know those culligan bottles? You could try using one of those. Just a suggestion.

I dont know how good of a suggestion this is, it might just seem good to me 'cuz I'm home sick today with a fever of 100 degrees.

Edit: For all you none Minnesotans: Pop=soda/carbonated beverage/whatever else people might call it.

CO2?

What?

I'm not sure the parts you're working with will like CO2 as much as they would HPA.

And, you said that you had a compressor at work? Well, this is an assumption, and I could be very wrong about this, but you said that you 'have a compressor at work'. I'm assuming that it's an air compressor. In which case, you'd want an HPA tank.

Also, HPA is way less difficult to work with. The pressure's won't fluxuate nearly as much as CO2 will. A paintball marker hooked to CO2 needs a lot more chronying than one running HPA. That link I gave you is a very good deal for that tank. If I were you (And I didn't have any HPA tanks already)

I've no real idea of the efficiency of the guns design, but a 48ci tank should be plenty enough.

Also, if you're going for minimization I'd suggest off-gun air. You can get a decent remote line w/ a slide check for $15 if it's on sale. Probably less for one on eBay. Off-gun will let you carry the weight on your back, meaning that there will be less mass on the part that you actually swing around.

Anyway, hope you're feeling better soon.

Yes it will us HPA, because I can fill the tanks myself with that. The compressor here at my workplace can output up to 5000PSI, but I won't be going above 1000-1500. I'm only using a paintball marker tank because it's cheap and comes in a nice usable size.

I should be able to get well over 1,500 shots out of each tank becuase the firing pressure is only 10psi and the air tool motor will run off 40psi @ roughly 600RPM. I'll prefill two or three tanks before tanking it to a War. And if there's an outlet available I could bring a smaller 2000psi compressor with me.

I won't specifically need an HPA specific tank unless I want to go with higher pressures. And whether or not the tank is a backpack will depend on what size tank I eventually decide to use. For testing I will simply hook up directly to the compressor.

You are talking about compressed air pb tanks right? I was actulay think of making a semi auto "auto cocker" nerf gun if you will. I personaly think "nitro" tanks add a whole new dimension to homemades.

I see two major problems, you have yet to mention a regualator and with the pressures you intend to use you'll end up blowing up that purty little motor you bought. Second, using a c02 tank with hpa is a bad idea for the same reason, I'm not so sure a c02 tank can with stand the same pressure. In addition, c02 tanks don't fill the same way and would need an adapter. I'm assuming you intend to use a c02 tank because the cheapest hpa tanks would cost $50 or more. I'd get something like the tank {SF3G} suggested. As far as regualators go a paintball reg would work, though I think you could find something cheaper.
