I have just finished making a nerf canon out of 4" pvc using a ball valve and a hand pump. It is really cool, but I cant find anything to shoot out of it. It has a 2 and a half foot tank of 4" pvc which reduces down to a 3/4" barrel. This alows almost anything with a 3/4" hole drilled into it to be fired by the gun. I have tried using pool noodles and an asorted number of different sized foam balls but none of them worked well at all. If anybody has any ideas for ammuniton please tell me.

I'm going to give my universal tip of "put in a sprinkler valve instead of the ball valve".

Really. You will love it.

Also, you should make a bigger barrel and put things inside it instead of over the outside.

For all of you: What use does a cannon really have in nerf? It's not for shooting directly at people, of course, so what do you really do with it?

His cannon sounds a lot like what I made:



Only he used 4" and 3/4" while I used 3" and 1/2". And you should definately put things in the barrel instead of over it, the best results come when the object is at the very bottom of the barrel near the valve.

For the cannon question, it [should be] for shooting at long range defensively. Stops the rush [at least until you take your one shot], allows you to hold a decisive position against approaching enemies for longer, etc.

Okay maybe not a golf ball, but here is what you do:

take a golf ball and wrap it in a few tissues (kleenex), then wrap over the klennex in aluminum foil.

Just so you know, sixty-five-two, that could kill someone out of a decent pneumatic. I suppose you could tone down the pressure, but still...two kleenex aren't nearly enough padding for a golfball.

If I lobbed a golfball onto your head, it would hurt a little bit. Multiply that times the large amounts of power you would need for any kind of decent range, and you have a big owie.

Anyways, maybe you could try the foam golf balls. I mean the ones with the weight in them and the red striking mark. I would've said Nerf balls, but those aren't weighty enough.

You might also like using a piece of foam pipe insulator. It's like FBR, except it has a hole going through it, is larger, and it has a cut going through the surface (not all the way through) to allow it to be easily bent. All that you would need to do is plug the hole on one end.

With the foam golf-balls, they're so well, full of air pockets and holes the air for the most part might just go straight through it.

Dang. I didn't think of that part. I'd suppose that you could thoroughly cover it in duct tape or another kind of strong tape. Maybe you could cover it in foam craft sheet (you would, of course have to cut it in a jig saw puzzle fashion to cover the ball).

I would love a cannon, not to hit someone directly, buy rather indirectly (played way too much Advance Wars). Just pack it full of stefans and point it up at a 45* angle and wait for someone to call your cell and say, "Need a artillery barrage somewhere around ****!" and 20 seconds later, you have the enemy flag. HAHAHA!

But really, the only use I can see of the EXTREMELY OVERPOWERED homemades is as artillery-like pieces for the fat guy who can move at all. Plus the reload time and the priming time are very long if you out it on the front-lines.

I would gladly be a test target just to see a bunch of metal weighted, glue tipped, pieces of foam coming at me from the sun. Really, I think it's just that cool.
