This whole project was inspired by Starbuck's "Bulldog" large-caliber (mega stefans) blaster. The "Mountain Rifle" further gave me initiative to keep with it.

I also collaborated with davidbowie in this post about large FBR, and it further pushed me to move on this project.

The ammo was the first thing to be designed. I actually made a couple of these fat 'ol stefans (compare to micro stefan, micro suction, and Larami mega dart) that fit so nicely in 1/2" 200psi (thinwall) PVC tubing. They reminded me of 12 gauge slugs that were so much fun (and kicky) when we got to shoot 'em.

Next the delivery system...

I wanted something that would rip through cardboard and styrofoam armor at combat ranges, and give a serious "thump" to anyone dumb enough to wear a cardboard box armor in a skirmish against any of my teams, even from across the field.

Et voila`....

Large ammo for the win... if you can manage to get a blaster to shoot it with decent range, it's worth it in my book. Just for the enjoyable sensation of thwumping someone with them. Nice looking SM5k too, good job Piney.

OK, california, we've got you blocked in on both sides now. (And it looks like Pinney could probably nail you from molokai with that thing too). Give up your new-fangled 'Mini-stefans' and no one gets hurt.

Well done, Piney. I'm glad I inspired a great work of art. I love the stock on the SM5k. I honestly think that megas are better than micros. I know I'm converting a lot of my guns to the .5" round.

PM me when you start making a magazine for it. I might have some stuff to help you there.

And once again, excellent work.

.5" round.

Megas are 5/8". The pipe's actual inside diameter is in the .6-.7 range. When I get home I'll check my picket ref.

EDIT: check out this link for info about pipe diameter and thickness, and an explanation for why it's so far off from the nominal pipe size:

Simply Beautiful!!!

It looks really solid and powerful. I'd imagine it packs a punch.

I'm glad somebody has a gun to shoot these... let's call them "Jumbo's". I hope to post my pump action jumbo-shooting homemade soon, but I can't get the bolt to seal.

Also, how are you weighting your stefans? I haven't really found s good weight yet, which I need to do because right now I'm using jellybeans.

Wow. Frickin' sweet there Piney. That has got to be the most awesome thing I've ever seen. I wish I actually did some of the stuff I say I'm going to do. But anyway, it's awseme, I also like your collection of 5 NFs. I wish they still sold 'em.

I should have explained what I meant. I call 5/8" megas .50 cals or "half-inch" because I use .5" PVC on the barrels. My apologies.

So what kind of damage will this do to say a pice of card board at like 20 feet?

Beautiful mod Piney, the sm5k looks great. I'm usually not too crazy about homemade stocks because I think they ugly the gun up, but your stock matches the gun's theme very well. I also like you infamous handle addition; it makes the gun more intimidating. Great job once again.

If I recall correctly, there was a guy trying to duplicate something from gundam with two RF 20's and a crapload of cardboard. Like a Full-Auto 40-round Manta Ray.

You say cardboard-piercing. Was that what you had in mind?

Oh, and about this:

OK, california, we've got you blocked in on both sides now. (And it looks like Pinney could probably nail you from molokai with that thing too). Give up your new-fangled 'Mini-stefans' and no one gets hurt.

NEVER!!!!!!!!!

I'll go down in a blaze of glory (or Powerclips...) before I convert. I'm addicted to orange foam, and I seriously doubt I can find enough people willing to sell some of those old orange-foam stock megas to me to last me a single war for a reasonable price.

For those of you coming to Armageddon next year who are from mega-loving states, you can either confrom to the new technology or you can run around desperately looking for darts...your choice, but as Penny Arcade has so thoughtfully reminded us, if we catch you without ammo, we do have the capability to "do you execution-style". And you can bet your funds for lunch that day that it won't be with a Maverick...

On to relevancy (though this was still discussing the large darts, right..?) very nice job, piney. It looks really good. I've really never been one for larger darts (since I moved beyond rubber banding as the end-all for gun modifications...I used a Commlink II as my primary for years before I realized stock micros fit in 1/2" PVC; hence my blowgun years) But the whole nation/world using megas? I don't know what you guys see in them, but I am of the opinion that all of these darts that you're making for all these long-ranged guns would be esaily outdistanced by slipping a piece of 17/32" brass down the barrel and slipping in a stock dart tag dart-turned stefan in them.

Granted, it'd probably break skin, but hey, you modded it...

Great job again, as always!

Thanks for the input everyone.

I figured to update you on the performance aspect of the Roadblocker and it's "jumbo" sized darts.

As for 'piercing' cardboard, that really wasn't the prime intention, although at ranges from danger close to about 30 feet, you get some pretty good penetration in common corrugated cardboard (typical brown box). Rather, I figured these to be more like a shotgun rifled slug, which is exactly what it sounds like (for those unfamiliar with firearms, primarily shotguns).

It's just a big ol' bullet. The increased mass would give a much more irritating thump when shot at someone behind a cardboard/ styrofoam/ wood barricade. And yes, it stings a little when you get hit. A bit bigger welt, too.

Ranges are NOT quite 100 feet with the larger darts, anything beyond 70 feet or so has to be arched for some increased range. Again, this wasn't meant to be a $niper rifle or any long-range shot, although a simple change to a brass barrel and micros would easily make this a fine sharpshooter weapon. It was meant more as a close range counter to anyone who cares to try a 'tank', or have 'armor', to bump and thump them.

DTReaper, I hope that answers your question. It won't 'blow up' cardboard or punch grapefruit sized holes at 20 feet (would be pretty neat though, if it could). It'll shoot through at those ranges, but diminsh quickly because of the great surface area up front.

Falcon, if I had to one-on-one with you and your PJ, you'd bet I'd swap out for a brass/PVC barrel and some of my micro stefans that didn't revert back to their hot dog shapes. Either that or I'd have to resort to my ancient Chinese Wang-Fu-Sheng-Shao-Lin monk techniques of disappearing and reappearing within range...which would be much harder since my arthritis would kick in at the worst possible time. B)

davidbowie...jellybeans?! Here in Hawaii we have ants with an extreme hankering for sweets, and they would be all over the darts the moment they hit ground. I use .177 caliber lead balls (like bbs but lead...old stuff), or BB sized fishing weights. They allow some adjustment if you bias them properly in the hole you bore in the front of the darts. Only downfall is that during the gluing process, air can get trapped and bubble somewhat, making the dart fronts a bit ugly. Which is okay by me since they weren't meant to be pretty when they hit someone.

But yeah, I'm pretty happy to have brought the 'ol 5k out from the 'idle' bin and make it an active part of the arsenal; I'm going to be rooting through the blasters I've not fooled with in awhile, and working on them. The RSCB 2k is almost done, the EX-3 NiteFinder is being detailed after paint, and the howitzer just needs to be glued up, painted, then mounted to the trailer, and I'll be pretty much ready for another batch of projects.

That is, when my busy working (RealLife) schedule would let me move on them.
