I've been reading about cardboard tanks in some posts, but would it actually work in a real nerf war? My friend and I have one box a big screen tv box (57", so its a pretty good size for 2 people, crouched). We're planning on cutting couple small holes to shoot out with our at2ks, and putting a medium size hole at the top with a strapped rf20 at the top so if we want, one person can stand up and shoot with the rf20 for massive fire. Inside the box we're planning on adding extra cardboard so rounds can't go through and taping ammo holders and at2k holders on the side so our hands can be free when we want to move (basically raise the box 2-3" of the ground and run). There are also 2 powerclips for emergency when we need to bail out. We wanted to put a titan on the front so it looks like a real tank but we don't have enough space. My battles are usually 5vs5, so 2 people can man the tank while the other 3 can support or hide behind the tank. Tell me what you think.

Yes, it sounds awesome, yet it defeats the purpose of Nerf. Even in real wars, they have ways around a tank, such a a Panzershreik (into CoD2 lately, hate those damned panzershreiks).

If you have a way around the tank, like if it is hit with a titan rocket, then you have a good idea here. It is great, but it sets limits to the game. With those limits, you all need to think of ways to counter them.

The tank would be penetrated by starbucks new titan, and still hurt you. Thats all that needs to be said.

There are some problems I can foresee. Will there be a turret for firing? How do you plan to move the said turret? How fast will you be able to move? How will you compensate for the few inches you need for running? How do you plan to see inside a cardboard box? Will you be able to fire while moving?

Obviously the most effective method would be a nuclear explosion propelling the dart. All you need is some uranium or plutonium, which is easily accessible.

I don't know if any of you have ever TRIED to play with boxes and so-called "Tanks and other armored vehicles", but this is what we did...

One of the guys had the bright idea to use a large box as a one-man "tank", if you will. He cut a slot for visibility, and a gun port on the front below the slot to fire in a relatively good radius, facing forward, of course.

All it took was for two guys to double-team the "tank", one in visual range, and the other to get out of his peripheral vision. Whoever was out of visual, just moved up and stuck the barrel of their weapon under the box and 'pop', no more tank.

Adding more 'troops' may help the tank, but isn't it supposed to be the other way around?

It can get as complex as you want it, but as you implement more and varying ways to play out Nerfing, there'll always become ways to counter them. Try it, you may find a two man "tank" more effective than a one man. Just get out and Nerf.

Okay, I have a few ideas.

1. Seasonal Fort. If you have snowy winters you may consider creating a temporary fort out of the plowed snow mounds (those huge, hard piles of snow). You could make a hole in that to sit in, or you could try to move other piles around to make it even bigger. This would be better than cardboard because it could collect ammo by trapping it in the snow, and it offers up a sturdier defense than cardboard. Just be careful or it could collapse on you.

2. Blanket and Chair fort. Heres an intersting one. It's one of the most flexible types of forts. It can have a very low hanging second floor by sitting on a covered chair, it's very warm (almost stifling) and cozy, the ammo will bounce right off it unless it's like the size of the Titan Missile, you can put a handheld game system in a cubby hole inside it if you want, if you need to hold more than the size limits you can quickly move the chair boundaries, you can almost instantly set up a new gun turret and just as easily take it down, you can quickly change the shape of it, you can set it up so that you can see out nut nobody in, and it is easy to escape. Careful of falling chairs though.

3. Mobile Fort. Attach a ton of huge shields to you. Not very flexible, but suits the purpose.

4. Mobile Fort Two. Cover your body with the highest sane amount of blankets, make sure you can still move though. This overheats quicker than the chair fort and doesn't exactly offer much flexibility on design.

5. The Ever Popular Cardboard Tank. Does it need explaining?

This is exactly what I've been doing for the last three weeks. We got a big screen for Christmas. The big screen has been sitting there unwatched. However, 'the Panzer' has goten plenty of usage. My dogs like to assault the panzer when it drives by them. They've been putting sizable dents in the side until they get blasted by the Dart Tag Rifle I use as my turret.

Well, after considering it, I like the idea.

But all you need, are improvements to the tank that are done whenever, and to make counters to the limits.

I have throught about them, and here they are:

1.Titan can take out tank by:
Anti-armor
Barret rifle (able to penitrate)
2.Mines. Non nerf of course, but you just take a plastic plate, and put one of those large packaging bubbles on the plate (they shake the ground when you pop them on the ground). Then cover it up with a sheet of dark covered material. When they step on it, they will feel it and they are dead.

3.Any other rocket like gun like the LBB or ultimator.

Just make rules for tanks. You can even get those cap bombs. They are sold at Kapowwe.com. Or the stink grenades they sell too. I really like the idea. It gives you something new to try and kill.

This sort of idea is nothing new for our wars. We employ gimmicks like this all the time since way the hell back when. The rules we always use are that grenades, rockets, and arrows can disable a tank, fort, shield, etc. We use the ballistic balls as grenades. The person who tosses it has to count to five--at five the grenade 'explodes'. If they get it in the tank, it's a hit; if not, then they're out of luck. The tank has five "lives"--that's five shots with Titan rockets, Max Shot rockets, or arrows. The problem is that the person has to be close enough to make contact and can get blown away. Same rules apply to cardboard shields and forts (forts have ten 'lives', shields have three).

A tank is not the useful in close combat because you can get rushed, but if you have some distance, then you can basically be covered from mid-long range fire and hold out for a long time. It's not that versatile though. It's more the fun of pretending you're in a tank.

For the turret on top, we're using this wheel that I found in my garage (no idea what it is). We hooked up the rf20 to it, works great. We also cut slots on each side and covered it with plastic wrap so we can see about 70% of whats going on outside. My uncle is a radiologist, he has alot of used up xray photos, we use those to strengthen the armor of the tank, cause the photos are really strong, durable and light. We tried running with the tank, its not that bad, we can run at a pretty moderate speed. We had a mini battle yesterday, 4vs4. It went pretty well, the tank can be pretty effective if there are teammates outside covering fire for you, but once my teammates were killed, the tank was ineffective and we needed to ditch it (grabbed our powerclips) and went crazy. Very fun.

sounds to me more like a type of bunker. Hey, maybe you could get together a bunch of boxes and make a fortress, then play a scenario around it, or make it like an immobilized tank. :o

But if it was an imobilized tank would it not be a fort fo the most part? I mean an imobilized tank and a fort have guns, they have a heavy defense, and they don't move. A tank is just a smaller package.

Just so it's known I didn't read all of the posts in this topic.

As a guy who has nerfed with the best and does so regularly (not nearly as much as I used to though) I can give you a completely honest, full blown answer. It won't work. It probably won't even be aloud. The closest thing I've heard to a tank actually working was Fred's car and I beleve that got pretty ugly.

You're best bet is to just go play. If you and you're friends decide you want to make some tank rules, so be it, but for the wars we have that are more "official", you wouldn't be aloud to use it and if you did it wouldn't work. I don't know where you've read about us using tanks, but whoever it was, he was pretty much full of shit.

I am in full agreement with Talio. You are sacrificing mobility, maneuverability, visibility, dexterity, and accuracy for a modicum of extra defense. If you really want to have a good defensive tactic, do yourself a favor and stick to the canonical Nerf range. Get yourself a Manta Ray. I've said it before, and I will say it again-- the Manta Ray is the single most under-used Nerf gun out there.

On top of that, we look silly enough, as it is, running around with orange and purple plastic guns. Do we really need to wear boxes, too?

The best uses for large cardboard boxes in nerf are to 1) provide cover, 2) build a small structure like a base, jail, or place to hide a flag, 3) set up for target practice, and 4) test the leathality of homemades and suped up nerf guns and darts. If it can punch through cardboard you probably don't want to shoot someone with it.

With most of my guns, the cardboard has the effect of peeling the foam off the weight so that the dart is stuck halfway into the cardboard and the weight is bouncing around in the box. Seems like a pretty good way to ruin darts to me. I usually use foam insulation scraps for my target practice.

Oh yea, and......uh.....tanks are gay.

When I hear of a Nerf tank, I picture a kid running around in a box like a impish Star Wars droid. Then they'll biff it hardcore, and be the laughing-stock of the war. Heck, I laugh just thinking about it.

Death is right; if you get weird looks from carrying plastic guns now, try it with a refrigerator box over your head. And you'll have a lot of homeless people mad at you for wasting a good box.

Ok, that was un-called for. But to sum it all up, tanks: impractical and silly.

If I see someone in a cardboard box with a barrel sticking out the front it'll be hard not to kick them from behind and them pour oatmeal in there gun hole. As far as forts are concerned I'm all for them, but a kid in a cardboard tank is just asking to get the crap shot out of him.

Dude, this thread is about tanks. What could possibly be useful in posts in a thread about tanks?

It can be fun to do stuff like this, sometimes me and Sqiggs just go crazy during wars and forget the rules and shoot from point blank and don't count hits, maybe for your wars a tank might even work, I just don't think it would be fun, it would encourage too much "camping" and not enough actual fighting.
