Okay, I've recently added a bayonet(plastic white sword) to my BBB, and I have a few questions.

1. How much should an effective Bayonet extend from the tip of the barrel?
2. Are bayonets effective at all?
3. Do/What nerf wars allow bayonets?
4. What counts as a hit from a bayonet?
5. And how much"life" do you lose if you're hit by one?

Please respond.

Bayonets aren't very effective unless it's a close quarter battle. Even then you need to find out if the war rules (which vary) allow bayonets. My other sentences should answer all but the first question which is based on personal opinion.

If I get stabbed with anything thats not foam, I would just turn around and punch you in the face for being an asshat. This is NERF, we dont need plastic fucking bayonets on our blasters...

Who if you look at my questions, you'll see that I ask "What counts as a hit?". So please don't assume that I would stab you, besides, the plastic is weak.

If it isn't foam, it isn't nerf. If it isn't nerf, it has no place in a nerf war. If you put some PVC on and put pipe insulator over it then it can be used as a bayonet. I would consider any felt contact a hit, as long as foam is what makes contact.

Actually, in my last war I found that A bayonet could be extremely useful in a few instances, and it could mean the difference between victory and elimination.

In close quarters, you could barrel tap (bayonet) someone and then immediately shoot them, scoring two hits with only one dart.

Building on Veggie's statement:

In So Cal, you can't make two hits on a person in a row. if someone unloads a powerclip on you, it's still one hit. We have to count to 20 (that's the typical number, anyway; it's usually less with fewer people) after we're hit before anyone can hit us again, and before we can shoot again. It gives us time to move and get a new position, pick up some darts, re-asses the situation, and (potentially) re-enter the game as a completely different fighter. We have time to change our tactics to re-accustom ourselves to the current battle. So veggies two-hit stroke wouldn't work out. But again, it depends on where you're nerfing.

Where I was really going with this, though, is the barrel tap thing. We allow that (as it's really just a nice way of hitting them at point blank.) I'd prefer to tap you with my barrel than shoot you from point blank with my crossbow. I think you'd prefer it too. A bayonet will really just get in the way. A plastic one will look dumb, I think. If you have a piece of PVC coming off of your gun that's covered in foam insulation, I guess that's your thing, but honestly, it's pointless. It's maybe a foot long extension of a barrel tap. If you can't tap them with your barrel, take a step forward. If they're facing you, and they have a loaded gun too, why the hell are you trying to barrel tap them?

Getting the idea? If you have the opportunity to barrel tap someone, chances are, they're not looking at you. If they are, unfortonately, your only option is to shoot. Oh well. Their fault for getting too close.

Bayonets are a nice idea, but theyr'e really not practical in a real nerf war.

Yours in Foam,

- Falcon

Thanks, I'll see if I can cover the plastic sword with some foam, because the handle fits near perfectly into the second part of the scope(the part that's father along the gun).

I don't care what your intentions are. Accidents happen and I dont want to be stabbed no matter how weak the plastic is. Put foam over it and cut off the tip if it's pointed.

I've had my fair share of Painfull Barrel taps, have you ever had one of These Shoved into your Back?:

you don't want to, trust me...

When dealing with certian guns, I'd take a point blank shot, grant it...not from your crossbow...I don't really like taking any kind of shot from your crossbow falcon...

I've never seen the point to H2H type stuff in a nerf war, but Natch: if you and your friends are up for putting bayonetts on your guns and smacking each other with them go for it! try comming up with your own rules, just take note that they won't see that kind of action at most SoCal wars.

you don't want to trust me...

Why don't I want to trust you? Either put a comma in there or explain what you have done to deserve my distrust... :)

But joking aside, in our sporadic dorm nerf wars pretty much anything went. Shooting each other from a distance is usually what happened, but if you could pull it off you could disarm the guy and shoot him (or her, we got our whole dorm into the fray) in the face. Or jump out of the dark and hold them hostage, splinter-cell style...

In any event, it is really about your rules. If you want to allow bayonettes, go ahead. If you want to allow full-out fist fights, that's your decision. I probably won't play with you, but if you backed it down to wrestling I might not mind.

I think it was in Blade II that there was a guy with a set of guns that had axe blades on the gun from the tip of the handle to near the barrel tip.

Here it is.

I'm thinking of doing this to an extra nite finder.

Dang, now I've seen it all...

... a "Ginsu blaster"... :o

But I'll go with Falcon on this one. Very similar to PB rules, barrel-taps are the much less painful alternative at danger-close range (and I have both tapped and been tapped, especially in the 'heat' of battle, and with limited-peripheral vision goggle/mask combos. The worst thing a barrel tap hurts is pride.

But then again, I've been in situations where I've been 'had' at under 10 feet, and I simply said, "Surrender?" They can either say, "hit", or take their chance they can pull off a couple rounds with their Timmy before I pop them with my Phantom. EVERY encounter where they took a chance, well...let's just say I learned to 'surrender' when the table turned my way. Saved me unnecessary bruises.

In Nerf, you have to choose. The blasters are somewhat less painful (though not by much when you play with modded 1500s/ Xbows/ 2000s/ SM5ks), and you have to decide. But to put a plastic knife on the end of a BBB....well, is akin to me taping a plastic butter knife to the end of my Sawtooth and calling it a bayonet. I wouldn't use one...if I needed to tap, I'd just get closer.

You'll get mixed opinions here, but it really is up to you and the folks you play with, if it will be acceptable or not. Obviously, if you want that "Toy Soldiers" look to it, then enjoy it! Just don't stab anyone unintentionally with it.

Bayonets...I'm just gonna give my traditional wry smile. :o

There's never really a chance to use them in our wars. We carry so much that when you're out of ammo, you either run or you get capped. It is our rule that spanking counts as a hit though. That's the only melee combat we have. And then there's the bitch slap across the face...No pokies though.

Where are you again?

I hope you don't attend SENO...I was planning on going next year.

Lol. That's a very, umm, *interesting* set of rules there...

If you do build a bayonet, you should probably make it entirely of foam. Especially if you intend to thrust with it. You can get sheet foam, glue two layers of it together, bevel the edges and shape it to however you want, and it has potential to only look a little strange. For the axe pistol, it might not look to bad. Cover it with duct tape, it will make the foam last longer.

Or you could order a latex melee weapon from here and use that if your war allowed melee weapons. Just have a decent sheath to draw it fast. And don't thrust with that particular variety, they are made for slashing.

Thanks for the tip on the pistol axe, but I've been making h2h weapons before I got into nerf so I know what I'd do.

I'd take pipe insulation to make it have more give and I'd use a "stack" of foam taped together and then formed into the blade's shape with a cutting implement.

If your wars allow melee combat, I think it's an effective way to extend your reach in a tight situation. however, if it's under a foot or so, it's not really worth the extra bulk.
I don't think you should worry so much about the plastic hurting somebody. I just would worry about it cracking and splintering, which is potentially dangerous. If you do use the plastick katana, cover it with pipe insulation and compress it with duct tape.
