Yea, I did a search to see if a thread like this was made, and there wasnt, so here goes.

I recently got into modding after about 2 years of owning nerf guns. Figured that if I really wanna get into the hobby, might as well start modding. Took apart my trusty nitefinder today(just to get into the habit), looked at how it worked, analyzed what had to be done to PETG mod it, put it back together, fired it to make sure it still worked, and sure enough, it did. However, it was extremely loud. After disassembling, tightening, and reassembling, I came to the conclusion that i needed to re-lube it.

Long story short: What do you guys use to lube your guns? (wow...innuendo galore)

I use a silicone grease I found in the garage, Also, I dont think you are supposed to use anything petroleum based, unless you have a metal plunger... (doesn't work to well with rubber)

I used some white lithium grease on my NF a while ago, it seemed to work well.

It depends on what circumstance to use what kind of lube.

If you want to lube the o-ring of a plunger so that it creates a better seal with the plunger tube, use silicon SPRAY. This coats the rubber, and acts as a lube and sealant.

If you want to lube a pump on a gun so that it moves easier, use silicone or vegetable oil, only applied to the pump o-ring. This decreses friction.

Try to avoid using vegetable oil on plunger o-rings. This decreases friction and coupled with the force of the spring, the air simply moves around it. I tried this-got around 10' flat with my CPVC'd NF. After cleaning it out and reapplying silicone spray, it was getting around 60'.

Hope that helps.

That's what I do. I use silicone for barrels, also.

WD40 detoriates rubber and plastic, just as petroleum-bsed lubes do. Don't use it on your guns or you'll end up missing an o-ring.

WD-40 will work for now but the lube is petroleum based and will eat away at some plastics and rubber. Like an O-ring and plunger shaft, plunger etc. I dont know how long it will take to ruin your gun but I was told anywhere between 3 months to a year you will notice it eating away. Silicone based lubes are best for nerf.

Edit: Sinfil beat me to it.

I don't get my kicks out of you,
I don't feel the way I used to do.
I know its bad,
After what we had,
But I’m just not the angel you knew.

No, when people refer to lubing a gun they usually mean the O-ring on the pump or plunger to reduce friction and increase performance of the gun. Putting a lubricant in the barrel, I don't know, never tried it. But, anyway, yeah most people just mean the springs and O-rings of guns.

For a LARP pistol I use, baby powder will help in the barrel sometimes. It should reduce friction for darts also, depending on the fit of the dart. It also cuts down on moisture in the barrel, which might help a little. And it will create a bit of 'smoke' coming out of the gun if you put too much in.

So would this apply to the Airtech 2000? it has an O ring. But I myself think its a bad idea, espicially if it eats away at your gun. Mine shoots about 70 or 80 right now, i want to preserve it, I dont want it broken. People have said that certain lubes eat away at the plastic or somthing like that.

Only petroleum-based ones like Sinfil said eat rubber. It's far from necessary to lube the pump on a gun if it has a good enough seal (if you feel resistance when you pump and it doesn't leak).

I use viggietable oil to lubricate my guns. It seems to add a few feet, but not as much as you guys are saying. I used vasilene one time on a double cross bow, and it totaly screwed it up. There was vasilene all down the barrels and every thing, the gun was broke.

Alright...seems to me as though silicone spray is my best option. One more thing though...I'm a total n00b at modding, so..uhh...where do i put said lube? on the plungerhead, around the O-Ring?

WD40 works great for a quick fix, for say, a stuck air valve on the feild. But for a longer lasting fix for valves, use 3 in 1 oil.
