I just discovered all these websites about modifying nerf guns and nerf battles and such, and thought it would be a cool, fun, and cheap alternative to airsofting or paintballing (If any of that is an insult to you guys, no offense meant). So I was wondering, could me and a bunch of friends realisticly all get modded Air Tech 2000s and some extra ammo for $20-$30 each? If we were to modify those, what are the best mods to do (considering we have never modifyed a nerf gun before)? Thanks, and I might become a regular here!

Realistically, it would be easy for your friends to get involved with some AT2000's. AT2000's are very, very, very easy to mod, given the other alternatives. I don't know where there is a mod write-up, but I'm sure someone can find one for you.

Stefans (homemade ammo) is dirt cheap, my friend. $20 all together is probably all you need for weights, foam backer rod, and hot glue and the hot glue gun itself. It's easier to manage when you and your friends get involved at once.

Best mod for an AT2K at the moment is probably a PETG tube mod similar to the AT3K mod up at NerfHaven. You should check it out.

I still think that using brass barrels (search this site and read the mods here for more info on that) are better in AT2K's because you don't need a ramrod, you can just blow the darts down, and sense the AT2K is manual rotating, barrel weight doesn't matter. Brass is also more accessible.

I would definitely take the AT2K over the 3K. It is $5 cheaper. You'll also have to buy brass, that'd be about $6 a person. And yes, it is a great alternative to paintball and airsoft.

*sigh* I think this is a bad time for new guys. I mean, when I joined up, there were 750's, 1500's, 5000's, blastfires, powerclips, wildfires, and even secret shot 2's in abundance. Those guns were cool, the AT's...are kinda stupid,even if they do shoot well, the appearance has a lot to do with the coolness factor.

Welcome to the boards! Unlike what Mantis said, I think this is a pretty good time for people to start Nerfing. Max Shots and First Shots are abundant, Airtechs are all over the place, and you can get a LOT of older guns on EBay and in the Trading sections of NHQ/NC/NH.

About the AT2k: I recommend you Brass it, or Copper mod it if you are looking for an easier mod. Copper is easier to find, so thats why I said it was easier. Also, check the TLM site for a complete copper mod.

Bad time for new guys?

The two best guns ever made are both at Toys R Us right now... waiting for you... you know you want them.

The AT3k is slightly more difficult than the AT2k to mod but well worth it for the results. The Max Shot mod is trivial if you have a little patience and take your time.

80' flat with bloody fast ROF or 110' flat with good ROF? It's a tough decision.

Wow, thanks for all the help and input! Where would I buy the things I need to make stefans and stuff to replace the barrels? Also, is there a certain size of tubing I need? How much better is a stefan than a dart that I would buy (and do stefans hurt a lot)? What other mods should we do besides replacing the barrels?

Well, stefans will only do you good if you mod the gun. Consider this: An unmodded AT2k will get 20 feet. Modded with brass an micro stefans, it will reach over 100 feet if done well! Stefans do hurt, but, you should be able to tough them out. You can put some foam on the front of the weights, but unless you do a great job, they will suck.

Well, Stefans are preffered over stock darts because they're cheaper, get longer range, and well depending on your gun they hurt more.

To make Stefans, you'll need foam backer rod. For micro darts (used in brass) you'll need 1/2" and for megas (used in PVC) you'll need 5/8". You also need fishing weights/BB's (size BB is nice for weights) and a hot glue with glue.

For PVC, you would use 1/2" diameter. Brass tubing 9/16"... I forget if it's ID or OD. I don't really suggest copper because its heavier and doesn't work as well. PVC costs about $1.20 for ten feet and brass costs like $2 for a foot. To achieve maximum power and range, I would suggest using brass.

Many of us have chosen to play Nerf over Paintball and Airsoft for many various reasons. For me, Nerf is cheaper than Paintball and I get to modify/make guns and play indoors.

Actually, an AT2K without barrel mod wouldn't reach 100'... It would go more like 50-70'... I would suggest modifying the barrels, but you should do some reading first. If you cut the stock barrels at the wrong place, you could screw up your gun and be forced to buy a new one.

For AT2K's, you also use hot glue to plug a release valve in the pump. I forget what this does, but by plugging it and putting brass on, you can easily achieve max distance, which for these guns, is about 90'+.

Another tip: You and some friends should form a Nerf Team. Goto Evil's site at http://evilangelnj.tripod.com for tips and strategies. And please, don't be another loser newbie who wants a Crossbow and then will sell it off later...

I live in California. I don't know if it is going to happen, one of friends is going to buy an airsoft gun this week. This friend is the kinda guy who I would only be able to convince to nerf not airsoft by making a gun better than what he buys. Anyways, I guess I'll do it with other friends, I'm not giving up yet!

Where in California? We hold regular large nerf wars in Irvine California, which is about an hour South of LA and an hour North of San Diego. Our next war is Saturday June 28th.

And if you live in Northern California around San Jose maybe you could come to one of ours wars.

The longest range Nerf guns will get is about 150 feet flat, which is what brass Supermaxx 5000s will get. However, some homemade guns have been known to exceed 200 feet.

I know my site is down as of now, but tomorrow I suggest you read this. It's the advantages Nerf has over Airsoft, written by BoltSniper.

Nerf guns do hurt, but not any more than airsoft or paintball.

If you're anywhere in the SoCal area, come out for Armageddon on the 28th and you'll get the hang of this Nerf stuff right quick.

Aside from being a whole ton of fun, it's the quickest way to see a bunch of different guns/mods in action.

Before I embarress (lol I spell real good) myself, I just want to say I think I might be a bit younger and smaller than you.

The SoCal group that participates in LANO/YANO/Armageddon ranges in age from about 10 to 30+ so it's truly open to all ages.

The average age group (mode) is probably mid to late teens.

Oh, I'm 14, but I look like I could be 11 (yes I am that small). My friend that I think will be most into this is in England right now, so I am going to wait until he comes back and see if he wants to do it with me. If I get him I'll start looking for more ppl.

Here's a tip:
Get your friend to look around England for Nerf guns in those barely-touched-and-visited toy stores or flea markets, etc. You never know what stuff you can find in foreign places or just places that Nerf isn't known much in.

Okay, a couple things.

Foam Backer Rod: Look in your local Home Depot. Ask an employee. I had a hell of a time finding it without him. If you're doing micros (there's only 2 sizes; mega and micro, micro's the smaller one), get 1/2 in.

Brass: Look at a local hobby shop (you know, the places with remote control stuff and models). You're gonna want to look for 9/16 in. brass for most of the mods.

Actually most employess don't know where foam backer rod is. You should look with in the caulk section.

Actually, in most Home Depot stores, Foam Backer Rod is commonly reffered to as Caulk Saver.

Brass tubing is really hard to find here in NJ... You can also use PETG too...

My friend that was gonna buy airsoft can't because the store will only sell to 21+ and his parents won't buy it for him. I think I can get the brass easily, and the foam backer shouldn't be too hard.
