What is the best gun to mod for a newbie?

Mmm, search button, use it.
Best newbie blaster to start with would be a NiteFinder. Only $6, decent range eve kept stock, simple internals, easy mod. Next up after that would be an AirTech2000. Single barreling one is very simple. Modding the turret is yet another step up in difficulty.

Dude, STOP TELLING PEOPLE TO SEARCH! Jesus........
Other then that, Jay-Z got it. I'd go at2k before a NF as far as ease of modding. Also, I would recommend the BBB at TRU, or if you shop ebay, go for a SM1500.

The 2k and the NF are entirely good options. They're cheap so if you mess up, it's easy to replace. Articles that may be of interest in the forums are here, and here. Oh, and this could help you too. Welcome to NH, put the lid down and flush when you're done.
