1) Pack up what you can.
2) Get the hell out of Dodge.
I hope the storm weakens before it hits land, but the Gulf is known for just making them a whole lot stronger...warm water and all.
We're contending with Hurricane Jova (category 3 currently, about 450 mi. East of us right now), but it's already showing signs of veering North and the worse we'll be getting is some nasty humidity and some showers.
I'll be prayin' for you all over there. Get a move on.

Well, that takes care of the flooding concerns...We're not leaving, we live in the Heights so the flooding won't be as bad here, but we're lashing everything down and stocking up on food and water. We can't really leave, we have 2 german sheperds and 4 cats.
...but watch the wind-related stuff. Tie your furniture and anything loose down, including trailers, sheds, etc. If you have a brick or concrete walled structure on property, make that the 'safe room'. If not, make sure you're in the bathroom, probably the most structurally sound room in most houses.
My mother-in-law survived a category 4 hurricane (Iniki) back in 1992. The house lost one bedroom, one bathroom, and most of the roof, but she and my sister-in-law rode it out in a neighbor's house (concrete). That one flattened most of the island of Kauai (where, incidently, Jurassic Park was being filmed).
Since we just had our hurricane scare here, I already have our survival gear packed and ready to go. Since the storm is turning out to open sea, I'm going to unpack the food items, but keep my gear and equipment on the ready.
If you folks can, make sure you have a cordless Sawzall (I have this one), it can be a life-saver in some post-storm conditions. That or have a gasoline-powered chain saw in your survival gear. Water, water, water. If you do a lot of camping, you have a chance to use a lot of your stuff (H2O purifier, camp stove, sleeping bags, etc.
Start charging up every cordless appliance, tools, lights, etc. The power WILL go out, so you'd best be prepared for that. Better still, if you have a generator, gas it up, run it now (don't want to find out it won't work during the storm), and set it up as an auxiliary power station. It'll look weird when everyone has no power and you'd be watching CNN in your living room.
Here's a weird one. Fill all your plastic trash cans, and usable Rubbermaid-type storage bins with fresh water, if you can. Keep them in the garage or other place you think will be strong enough to resist wind and not topple them over. That can serve as a reservoir for wash water, or if you have a purifier, fresh water source.
Finally, since I live in Hawaii, we stock up on SPAM. A lot of SPAM. Hawaii consumes more SPAM than the continental U.S. Why, I don't know, but that's a survival kit in a can if I ever saw one.
Good luck. And let us know after it passes how you're doing.

You should, that would be neat. Piney, that's a good idea about keeping a container full of water around, sounds like you're pretty experienced there.

It sounds like Piney has the right advice. I live in Minnesota, but my uncle has survived several storms down in Florida and he took similar precautions. Best of luck to you, and let us know how things go down after Lovely Rita's gone.

How does the government get the blame for natural disasters? Are you saying Bush is mother nature? I absofuckinglutely hate the Bush empire - but really, a hurricane is his fault?Ya, everyone is over afraid because of the disaster of katrina. The federal government doesn't want to goof up twice in 2 weeks.

Seriously, Hurricane Andrew. Fucked shit up. Horrible disaster. All over the god damn state. There was little to no flooding. I don't give a fuck whether your up to your neck in water. Your house gets hit by a Volvo it's not really going to matter how high you are now does it?
Seriously, anyone staying, I'm a firm believer that you're a fucking moron. That thing is a fucking hurricane. A huge ass mother fucking hurricane. Am I getting through? Really, how expensive are hotel rooms in Kanas city? Just get the fuck out and keep the amount of blood you already have in your body.
Maybe I'm off base, but fuck that noise, this is why I live in Delaware.
