Oh man, you know alienware rips people off right? The money they make is in repackaging (alienware laptops are repackaged sager laptops) and 'cool' designs.Alienware sentia all the way over here. As for laptop choices, I'm not sure if the price would be a concern for this, but have you looked at IBM laptops at all? Some of my friends who have decided they need laptops own them, and they are very sturdy, well designed laptops.

Leave it to the old guy to testify about an IBM laptop...
My IBM ThinkPad pretty much died this year. An IBM ThinkPad 365XD. Running Windows 95. Almost non-stop. Since brand new in 1997. For 8 years, through four departments in my church, ending up with me for the last three years.
It wasn't the fastest, but it was durable as can be, and handled abuses that would have sent other laptops running. It worked as a word processor, then a PowerPoint server for data transfer, then as a music file and database storage, then finally made it's way into my hands as a 'spare' to my already old Toshiba Satellite.
It wouldn't boot up anymore, and I replaced the HD with one I picked up from eBay (all of 40mb, baby!), but it won't install my OS (Windows 95) again, so if it doesn't work out, it's getting a decent burial.
I'm no expert, more of a hands-on consumer, but of the four laptops I've had (Toshiba Satellite x2, Dell, IBM), the IBM was the most durable as far as taking abusive operation and general torture.
I'm going on the advice of cx and Bolt when it comes to purchasing my next laptop.

Well, yes I'm bringing this back from the dead, but I did finally end up getting something.
Oddly enough, it was purchased pretty much on-the-spot; I wanted the asus but my dad was hesitant due to a lack of financing as well as a lack of a physical store where I could bring a laptop to for repair. The fact that there was no accidental coverage was also not helping the decision.
First though, I'd like to say if I had enough cash, I'd have tried the Asus z63a first. But I'm not complaining that I got some money to buy my best college toy with.
I went with the Sony FJ-series. If anyone would like pictures, comments, or anything just let me know.
