So I just ran a search on Harry Potter and was surprised to see nothing. I love these books and always have. My question is does anyone else like it? Please post your thoughts.

I used to read/like Harry Potter, but then my friends (and the Return of The King game) got me hooked on LOTR.

Long and boring?

Harry potter is like 3 times as long as LOTR.

Boring...well, Tolkien uses a different writing style.

It all depends on your tastes. They're both (LOTR + Potter) well written I think, so why shouldn't older people have the chance to read them? Just a thought.

Not to derail the topic or anything, but on the idea of authors, has anyone heard of Garth Nix? Now THAT's a good author.

Nix is one of my favorite authors, though the only book by him I've read was the Seventh Tower because my brother gave it to me for Christmas two or three years ago. It's got volumes 1-3 in it. He's really good.

Oh man, you've only read 1-3? Read the other 3 in the series, they are even better. Other Nix titles that are good are - The Abbhorsen series (Sabriel, Lirael(I think), and Abbhorsen), Shade's children, the Ragwitch, and the Keys to the Kingdom series. They're all awsome. As of now, anything with his name on it I buy

My girlfriend got me to read Nix, and I liked Sabriel (actually for young adult fiction it was amazing), but the next two in the series were just... I don't know, sequels. It didn't feel like a trilogy.

I read the first harry potter book and I can honestly say it was well written, but my attention span was to short to go on to the second when movies were coming out.

But if you guys are into easy read books that have even more meaning built into them, look up Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials". It's a set of books that are classified as "young adult fiction", but my honors english class (in college) was basically centered around studying those books. I got a C.

You all should read Ender's Game.

I've read all the Harry Potter books, mostly because I started them back in the day and I want to keep up and finish the series, but they actually are well written books. I don't see how it's sad to see a 30 year old reading them, as they are well written with a good story.

The latest one was very good though.

Ender's game was quite good.
I'm the same way with Harry Potter these days.
I thought the ending to the latest one was premature.

That was one of the most kickass endings, but too bad you could see it a mile away.

Being able to see it coming didn't lessen it at all. Execution was fantastic. Not everything needs a surprise ending to be good. If everything had a surprise ending then it would be trite.

Ok I read both LOTR and HP. I enjoyed them both; you have to be a pretty good reader with some interest in fantasy in order to enjoy LOTR, though. And liking HP at 16 is not a crime, if you noticed at all, it's the perfect age to be at actually because she started the books when we were the same age as Harry, so it correlates pretty well. I think its funny when little kids are reading HP5 and 6, because they can't relate to half the crap. But just goes to show how good of a write JKR is.

Enders game...I thought was OK, but after spending my time burying my nose in Crichton (Jurassic Park, Timeline, Andromeda Strain, Congo, etc.) and Ludlum (the Bourne series), Enders game just wasn't as good.

Garth Nix, yeah I read some of his stuff, my favorite still being Shade's Children just because of how deep it was. Sabriel I read, it was ok. A little too fantasied-up though. Though I do like the way he put fantasy and today's world somewhat together.

Harry Potter 6, it was a really good transition book I think. 4 is still my favorite cause it has the most intricate plot that just works out. 7 should be a blast, though I dislike the way she made it into a video-game type scenario. Think about it. You gotta finish those mini-tasks then you destroy the big boss. Final fantasy anybody? Zelda?
