Harry potter is like 3 times as long as LOTR.
Boring...well, Tolkien uses a different writing style.

Not to derail the topic or anything, but on the idea of authors, has anyone heard of Garth Nix? Now THAT's a good author.

I read the first harry potter book and I can honestly say it was well written, but my attention span was to short to go on to the second when movies were coming out.
But if you guys are into easy read books that have even more meaning built into them, look up Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials". It's a set of books that are classified as "young adult fiction", but my honors english class (in college) was basically centered around studying those books. I got a C.

I've read all the Harry Potter books, mostly because I started them back in the day and I want to keep up and finish the series, but they actually are well written books. I don't see how it's sad to see a 30 year old reading them, as they are well written with a good story.
The latest one was very good though.

I'm the same way with Harry Potter these days.
I thought the ending to the latest one was premature.

Being able to see it coming didn't lessen it at all. Execution was fantastic. Not everything needs a surprise ending to be good. If everything had a surprise ending then it would be trite. That was one of the most kickass endings, but too bad you could see it a mile away.

Enders game...I thought was OK, but after spending my time burying my nose in Crichton (Jurassic Park, Timeline, Andromeda Strain, Congo, etc.) and Ludlum (the Bourne series), Enders game just wasn't as good.
Garth Nix, yeah I read some of his stuff, my favorite still being Shade's Children just because of how deep it was. Sabriel I read, it was ok. A little too fantasied-up though. Though I do like the way he put fantasy and today's world somewhat together.
Harry Potter 6, it was a really good transition book I think. 4 is still my favorite cause it has the most intricate plot that just works out. 7 should be a blast, though I dislike the way she made it into a video-game type scenario. Think about it. You gotta finish those mini-tasks then you destroy the big boss. Final fantasy anybody? Zelda?
