I got a new nite finder at a yard sale yesterday and modified it. I modified it the same way I modified my 3 older ones (they were modded with a 4" cpvc barrel and air restrictors removed and get 60 ft flat)but it can't get the dart out of the barrel. I know the spring is weaker but it can't even fire the dart.So I cut the barrel down 1 and 1/2" and it still can't get the dart out. I went and redid all of the seals to make sure they weren't leaking. Then I added rubberbands and the darts gets out of the barrel but only go 20 ft.

Does anyone have a new nf and have these same problems?

My new nite finder just has the air restrictors removed with a crayola barrel and pvc on the crayola. With just this I get 40' flat and with rubber bands I get 50' flat.

Here's the thing about asking questions on botched mods. I know it sucks because you probably spent alot of time on the thing for it to screw up on you. However, without seeing or shooting the gun it's hard to figure out exactly whats' gone wrong. It could be so many things that listing them all would be impossible, however without proper information here is what I would check.

1. Seal. Make sure when you put the plunger into the tube that it's a smooth action. You don't want it to be too loose and you don't want it to be too tight. You just want a good solid seal. If it's too small, then the problem is obvious, the seal is leaky and not enough air is moving through the barrel consistantly. To fix this, take the plunger and tube to a hardware store and camp out in the O rings section for a god awful long time. Try every one untill you get a good seal. You could also simply rap the head with masking tape, however you'd need to band it then. If the fit is too tight, it's adding more resistance then the spring can handle, making the plunger move too slow. This could be do to a factory problem.

2. Check the spring. If it's a good quality spring that looks long enough and has plenty of resistance, you're in good shape. If it seems like it's small or weak, just add some bands and you'll be set.

3. Check the barrel connection. Are you absolutely certain that the glue point is air tight? Did you use PG on it? I'm a huge advocate of epoxy and super glue, they work wonders. Unfortunetly though, they can leave something to be desired when it comes to barrels. It's the same with X bows. Every person I know that used epoxy for their barrels on the bow have had problems similar to what's happening on your experiencing. Solution - just put a ligth coat of PG around the connection.

4. Banding. From my experience, the NF just likes a good couple of bands rather then a stiff bungee. You might want to try putting a few on and seeing if you have any improvement.

5. Barrel to dart match. This is pretty self explanitory, as stated many time before you want it snug, but so much that you really have to murder the dart to get it in.

6. Barrel length. No two guns are exactly the same. Similar, but it's possible that you might need a shorter barrel. This is absolutely last effort though.

Hope this helps, and now when kids ask this quesiton I can tell them to search.

I made the seal better by taking the o-ring off the plunger head and wraping strips of tape around then I put the o-ring back on so it slides loosely but makes a good seal. Then I coated all of they seals with superglue. I think the problem is the weak spring so I'm going to go buy a stronger spring this week. When I fire my old nf it makes a bang when the plunger hits the plunger tube end, but the new nf makes a very small thump.(I checked the plunger to make sure there wasn't to much friction)

I update as soon as I get the new spring.

EDIT; Talio, number 5 and 6 shouldn't matter because I have 3 other nite finders modified the same way.

You probably just got a shitty NF out of the box. So like you said just go out and buy a spring replacement.
