Aside from paint, does anyone know of a GOOD freeware program that can help me design 3d and/or animated 2d models? I've searched all over the net but everything is either way to complex or doesn't have enough.

Have you tried looking for Gmax?
I think it's free.

Gmax is hard to get but if you have a good rainy day, you can make some cool things. There is a topic that is kinda old in this forum too if you need anymore ideas.

This can be used to make life like images or simple renderings.

Same principle, much more complex though.

When looking at the Rhinoceros site decide what you would most likely use the program for, i.e. nerf, cars, landscapes, cartooing, etc.

Hope that helped.
