EW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Teens who pledge to remain virgins until marriage are more likely to take chances with other kinds of sex that increase the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, a study of 12,000 adolescents suggests.

The report by Yale and Columbia University researchers could help explain their earlier findings that teens who pledged abstinence are just as likely to have STDs as their peers.

The latest study, published in the April issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health, found that teens pledging virginity until marriage are more likely to have oral and anal sex than other teens who have not had intercourse. That behavior, however, ``puts you at risk,'' said Hannah Brueckner, assistant professor of sociology at Yale and one of the study's authors.

Among virgins, boys who have pledged abstinence were four times more likely to have had anal sex, according to the study. Overall, pledgers were six times more likely to have oral sex than teens who have remained abstinent but not as part of a pledge.

The pledging group was also less likely to use condoms during their first sexual experience or get tested for STDs, the researchers found.

Data for the study was taken from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. An in-school questionnaire was given to a nationally representative sample of students in grades 7-12 and followed up with a series of in-home interviews roughly one, two, and six years later. It was funded in part by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Leslee Unruh, president of the National Abstinence Clearinghouse in Sioux Falls, S.D., called the study ``bogus,'' disputing that those involved had pledged true ``abstinence.''

``Kids who pledge abstinence are taught that any word that has 'sex' in it is considered a sexual activity,'' Unruh said. ``Therefore oral sex is sex, and they are staying away.''

Millions of teens have signed written pledges or verbally promised to abstain from sex, part of a church-led effort to discourage premarital sex and the spread of disease. President Bush has boosted funding for abstinence-only education in schools.

Critics say that education needs to be coupled with safe-sex education to be effective.

``If adolescents only had sex in monogamous, married relationships, by definition there would be no STDs,'' Brueckner said, echoing President Bush's remarks in last year's State of the Union address. ``But the majority of adolescents don't live like that. They do have sex.''

Last year, the same research team found that 88 percent of teens who pledge abstinence end up having sex before marriage, compared with 99 percent of teens who do not make a pledge.

Leslee J. Unruh is the Founder and President of the Abstinence Clearinghouse ... She has written newspaper columns, is the author of informational material and produced a TV program on teen sexuality. She has also produced video and radio presentations and has appeared on C-pact, Oprah Winfrey, FOX News' Dayside with Linda Vester, MSNBC's Donahue Show, Dr. James Dobson's Focus on the Family radio program, Janet Parshall's America Life, To The Point, Trinity Broadcasting Network, Fox News and MTV.

You have to admit though, that's an extremely hip list of shows she's been on. I mean, Trinity Broadcasting Network? That's a staple of every teen's television diet.

I find that if you drink sufficiently before engaging in sexual activities you can't remember who you had sex with and generally avoid worrying about stds. That's my solution, a steady diet of alchohol and drugs to go with the intercourse.

VACC, you're not hardcore enough. I bet your cocktails are NOTHING. Fool.

Anyone else see that cloud around VACC? all I'm going to say that it isn't dust, it's a swarm of multiplying microbes that have ran out of room in the genital region. Congrats, you've redefined the word "carrier".

VACC, I'm kidding by the way. At least about the STD part. ;)

Viper, WHY are you posting that in a NERF forum? Where there are kids on here that are 13 and a lot of younger kids that probably read these forums?

If I do recall, 13 is the age that one is in Middle School. For the most part, if you haven't heard most of this stuff by then, there's a problem. Consider how perverted your typical 13 year old is and then ask yourself if there is really a problem.

For the most part, this is a forum where the older members of the community reside. If this were NHQ, there would be more of a problem since it is tailored for more younger members.

The majority of the replies were made in jest anyway. I fail to see a major problem here. Which begs the question, why did you post if you'd rather see the topic die so our 13 year old members wouldn't see it?

I have no problem with seeing this, I'm exposed to it every day of my life. Though, I did wonder why this was posted. It's interesting, however. I like statistical crap, % signs and stuff.

If you live in a reasonably civilized community*, you've had sex education in school by the time you're 13.

That article is precisely the kind of information that teachers should be sharing with their students because it's relevant and acknowledges the world that teens live in.

* 86% of school districts in America do not fall in this category as they rely largely upon abstinence-based education in school.

Veggie you're brilliant in every way possible but what? I am certain there's been far worse things posted on the nerfhaven forums, now I can understand how children shouldn't be exposed to anti-bush literature, because that's just terrorism. ;) Thanks cxwq and shindig etc. for backing me upo on that. Just as a note, that article was posted on netscape's browser, meaning people thought it was appropiate enough for all of Netscape's audience.

all right... sorry guys I didnt mean to come across as attacking/flaming you for putting it up. I really was curious as to why you did post it here though. Didn't mean to start anything.

It is an interesting article, but I was sorta shocked to see it on nerfhaven i guess, and posted without thinking.

apologies

This is Off-Topic first of all, and secondly I do believe there is an age requirement in the NerfHaven Terms of Service.

You don't have to be a member to read the forums. I'm not taking sides with anyone, I really don't care about this, it is interesting, I'm just pointing out that any nine-year-old who isn't a member here could read it. Not that they probably haven't already been exposed to sex anyway.

Any nine-year-old can wander over to http://gay-hairy-midget-hardcore.com too. I guess the webmaster there should clean things up.

1. It is my policy that pron links and images are not allowed here.

2. The above post is educational information about what teenagers in this fine country are doing with their spare time. I can't possibly imagine anyone being offended by it being here except for retarded parents who don't know what their kids are up to on the 'net.

3. Anyone who is offended by the above should leave now because I regularly post worse.

4. Fuckers.

I wasn't saying this was bad, I only said that because Evil mentioned the fact you had to be 13 to join. I was just pointing that out to him. I honestly don't care about who reads this, it's not bad, I also agree we should get over it. I did not ever say it would be bad for a 9-year-old to read this, as cxwq said, there is much worse on the Internet, I only used that as an example of how anyone could read it, even if they aren't registered here. No big deal.

Proof postive, cx, that this forum has many young, perverted teens with WAY TOO MUCH SPARE TIME, to be researching, finding and posting things like this on a NERF forum, despite the fact that it is, Off Topic.

As for me, yes, when I was 15, I had sex with my 22 year old girlfriend. Often. I also learned that it's more than just sticking your weiner in and getting your rocks off. There are heaps of responsibility when you engage in an activity that most kids are totally unprepared for, should the unexpected occur. STD's and pregnancy are just two of the many downfalls when one gets hurried about getting in another girls (or guys') pants.

I agree that civilized society mandates sex education by, usually grade 8, often earlier. I think the problem is modern entertainment, media, and commercialism promoting a sexual lifestyle as one that is hip, trendy, or cool. They NEVER, and I mean NEVER, look at pregnancy as a possible outcome, and a happy one at that. There was once a commercial for an at-home pregnancy test, where the girl was actually RELIEVED that the test was negative. As if? People treat pregnancies like disease when they feel it will affect the way they want to live their self-centered life any way they farking damn well choose. Just go to the doctor, and get rid of it and wash your hands clean of it. I have a REAL problem with that.

But I'm not here to preach to the masses. Heck, go on and do what you have to do. But as for me, and my family, I and my wife will educate our children about sex and how babies are made, and feelings boys and girls have when they get older. Yes, from the PARENTS. A rarity now a days. I will also communicate with my kids, especially my daughter, regarding her choices, and the possible outcomes. And yes, abstinence will be one of those choices.

I live a very Christianity-based life nowadays, and though I don't want my kids to make the mistakes their dad made, I will understand that my kids will have to learn from one of the two schools; the school of discipline and restraint, or the school of consequences. No matter which way they go, it will not affect the way I feel about them. I'll always love my kids. But they will go into life understanding full well that if they want to engage in an activity normally reserved for adults, they better damn well be ready to behave like adults and be responsible for their actions.

So Veggie, apologize for going off the deep end, but don't apologize for sticking to your convictions. I, too, will respect those whose convictions are pretty much opposed to mine.

Just wanted to give my two Euros.
