Hey I was wondering if anybody out there knows of a free downloadable program that I can use to organize random music tracks in a folder by Album.

I have a lot of music and don't have time to make a bunch of new sub-folders and find the tracks that belong in them manually.

It needs to support windows medai format and mp3.
I need to do this in order to make it easier to put on an mp3 player.

If the files already have Artist and album names incoded, download iTunes, it works on both PC and MAC and plays several file formats, Then use the Consolidate Library action from the advanced menue. it will auto create folders for artists and albums, and you still can use itunes for stuff like burning cds and such even if you don't have an iPod.

Good old Windows Media Player should do the trick. It will automatically update your media library with the correct Title, Artist, all that Jazz. Then it sorts it into All Music, Genre, Artist, and Custom playlists.

It sounds like that is all you need, just make sure you have WMP 10, the newest one. If you don't know how to get it, Go to Holp--> Check for player Updates and follow the guide.

(BTW: You must be connected to the net for WMP to update you track info, so if you have dial-up, connect, then add to your libray)

I'd just recommend iTunes.

You can control the CPU usage and such, as WMP is just a complete RAM whore.

iTunes has all the sexy features and more.

Sorry for late/dead reply...

I use MusicBrainz tagger to batch update and standardize (for Audioscrobbler) my filenames and tags.

I store with a flat directory structure of the format "artist - album\artist - album - track# - song.mp3". MusicBrainz does all the work for me except naming the folder itself. The exception to the above is my 80's alternative folder which is a gig of one and two-hit wonders.

I build thematic playlists to span the filestructure, but generally play stuff by album (you do buy your music, right?) rather than by playlist.
