Originally I intended to post this in articles but I can't so here it is.

The first reaction I usually get when I tell people about nerf is, " What, plastic guns, yeah sounds like a real sport," with an overly sarcastic tone.
You see they are totally convinced that anything that doesn't involve a small, open, flat surface with brightly colored opponents running into each other at some point in the game isn't a sport.
Now if their IQ is high enough I'll sit them down and explain it to them what I'm about to tell you.
Nerf, though never given the title, is in almost every way the ultimate sport, incorporating physical, mechanical, and tactical abilities into a single sport.
Physical: This aspect is fairly obvious, you need to be somewhat physically fit in order to take hits, dodge, and evade incoming fire, as well as successfully launch a hit & run barrage.
Mechanical: This is mainly in the pre-war phase, it is the art of modifying your weapons cosmetically and internally. You see cosmetically as stated in one of my prior articles as well as stated by cxwq a good paint job can easily fool an opponent into thinking it is more powerful then it is. And as on occasion, due to bulk you may need to drop a blaster while on the run, and it needs to be able to take a hit. If a gun is poorly assembled or re-assembled it would break, costing you time and money.
Tactical, pretty obvious one here, standing in one spot and shooting isn't going to work no matter how much you want it to. If you want to survive more than five minutes you're going to need to learn at least basic techniques: back-peddling, makeshift cover, psyche-out, and home terrain advantage. On an open field such as well, any of the mainstream sports football soccer, hockey, basketball, or baseball you don't have to worry about cover in the form of trees or even hills for that matter. I can bet most of the major league athletes wouldn’t stand a chance if someone threw a tree or a bush into the field.
So you see despite the lack of publicity, Nerf really is one of the best sports that exist today.
After explaining all that the person usually simply responds with, "well then why don't you just paintball?"
The answer is simple, reusable ammo, cheaper weapons, and parental restrictions.
So next time some moron insults your hobby tell them this, then belittle their sport.

I constantly try to explain how fun Nerfing is to people and they always just say, "That's really immature and dumb. Play airsoft or paintball." It pisses me off.

Everyone around here respects my nerf guns at this point in time. Mainly because of 2 demos- the first, I shot a non-believer with my modded SM1000 from 20 feet away; he had a welt for a week. The second, I shot someone with my singled AT2k from 10 feet away; god knows how long he had a welt for. I can get football players to run away from me if I'm holding a nerf gun. It's really amusing.

That's how I got a lot of my friends into Nerf. I got a few guns for my birthday, invited my pals over and shot the balls off of 'em. Now almost all my friends have a few guns.

Another thing that I like about Nerfing is there are different kinds of guns. There are high range, slow ROF guns, there are medium range, medium ROF guns, and there are low range, high ROF guns. You can also choose between a spring or pump gun. This allows for strategy to take place, like having the people with high ROF guns to rush the enemy, while the people with the low ROF guns shoot from far away.

There are also so many guns, so many barrel materials, and so many spray paint colors that almost no two guns are alike. You can do anything with you guns unlike paintball and airsoft where there are company made upgrades.

I definately agree with all of you.About three weeks ago my best friend was saying things like,
"If you cant feel the stupid bullets, how can it be more extreme than, like airsoft or paintball?" I shot him with my loser- modded lbb. Now he is proud owner of An sm 350, An nf, And an n-strike, And though he is a beginner, has succesfully completed a barrel mod on his nf!

I shot my friend with a shot gun titan, and, of course, he said it hurt.(And I only pumped it 4 times) And he's known to be an expert paintballer... so...

I think nerf's more popular than you think. Even though we may have only a seemingly small amount of active members, many people might either causually surf the internet for mods and reviews, like I do for airsoft and paintball because I have no need to sign up for every site I see. In offices its becoming more commonplace to the extent that MAXIM and many male-oriented sites have pointers on nerf. Nerf does have the intrisnic "pump" balance where the more powerfull guns are single shot and require skill and the diversity of weapons is very great and cheap.

All good points. There are a lot of people at my middle school who like Nerf, but when I refer to it as a sport, most of them just shake their head or act like I'm crazy. Nerf is popular, it's just that there're a lot of jerks who seem like they want it to become less popular.

I equate the perception of Nerf against Airsoft to that of Nintendo and Sony. I love Nintendo a million times more than Sony. I refuse to own a Playstation just like I refuse to own an Airsoft gun. Similarly, Nerf receives the undeserved reputation of being kiddy when it is in fact the more creative and more novel of the two types of guns. Not to mention you can reuse Nerf darts instead of running through a bag of BBs in 20 minutes. Viva Nerf, Nintendo, and Bush.

I look at it like if people will call paintball or airsoft a sport nerf is a sport. The 3 are alike in quite a few ways. The only way they are different is that the tactics and price tag are very unsimilar.

It all comes down to semantics, its however you define it. Hell, chess club can be a sport TO ME if I want to call it that. There are no absolutes in language.

I've rallied up some respect for the homemade aspect of nerf, by bringing in my ball valve rifle to school. (it doesn't resemble a gun so it was fine)

although, whether nerf is the ultimate sport, is an opinion, it beats the hell out of any other sport I've played.

Regardless, nerf is stuck in a "no man's land" of sorts. It's too "Violent" to be largely accepted by adults, and to "Kiddy-like" to generally be accepted by teenagers, and too "unsafe or painful" to be accepted by younger children.

I think about this alot, and I can come to only one conclusion, that the only way nerf can shed its "Kiddy image" is to shed its bright colors, its child-targeted commercials, it's suction cup darts, everything that makes it "Nerf" and turn it into the next airsoft or paintball. That's a risk I get the distinct feeling that Hasbro isn't willing to take.

that's my two dimes.

Edit: What the HELL was that for, Thirst?

What exactly do you mean by, "lose the suction cup darts"? I don't want it to be like Airsoft or Paintball, I like Nerf as Nerf, its own unique sport.

I'd like to put my two marks into this conversation.

First off, I think it's great that you young guys are able to express your love of Nerf in words. Really, you should be able to do it about everything in your life. While most of the stuff you guys have said has been said in the past, it's nice to see people who are willing to stick their neck out and be honest with the way they feel about Nerf. It's also nice to hear that people are interested in the game rather then just the forum/community aspect, which we all know there are those types of members. Good work, keep it up, the game needs a strong revival.

Tinker has a point but I think there is one big factor that him and most people aren't acknowledging about Nerf. Simply put, it's geeky. You're taking a childrens toy and turning into something that warrants safety gear. I know that most of you here are teenagers, and I know because of that you feel a sort of resistance against using the word "geek" to define yourself. I am here to tell you that if you are reading this post, you are a geek. It's really not a bad thing. Geeks have more fun. Besides, if anyone gives you shit about being a geek, just remind them that all their bases are belong to you.

I really don't like the comparison of Nerf with other types of war games. Sure their are similarities in that you are shooting at another person, but there it stops. The point of Nerf is to get in your friends grill and hump his corpse. Unless your face to face in your opponent where it really would be more effective to punch him, your not experiencing Nerf, and you will never be happy with it. Unless you can dodge, and feel the pride of a perfectly lead and arched shot popping off of someones forhead at a rediculously long range, your not getting the full aspect. If other people find this to be violent and childish, that's there loss. Personally, I don't mind that Nerf is a cult hobby.

Most people, when i tell them about nerf, think its really cool, I dont even need to show it to them, i just say "I modify nerf guns", and they are interested...I can think of plenty of people who would immediatly dislike it though, because they care too much.

What the HELL was that for, Thirst?

Put simply, I would rather have a forum where I dont have to put up with Falcon's self-promoting-hot-crap shit. This doesnt even deserve another comment, I want Falcon to stay at nhq.

Personally, I don't mind that Nerf is a cult hobby.

Me neither. Nerfing is unique for many reasons prevously discussed, but one of my favorite reasons is its obscurity. I am not usually into mainstream sports that much, so I enjoy some of the more lesser-known pastimes, such as Nerfing. I hate comformity, and I have the weird hobbies to back it up.

I'm not going to say I hate conformity, because I don't need what I do, wear, or listen to dictate my personality. However, I like the obscurity because you don't have to put up with as many douche bags.
