Okay, here's the deal.
For English, we have to read an "issues" book. Meaning, a book that the author is trying to make a point on an issue, like abortion, gay marriage, gun control, etc.
Has anyone heard of, found, or read a good "issues" book?

Would Al Franken's Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them count? Definitely a funny book to read.

Our class just read recently Animal Farm, which was the Revolution and about Stalin stuff in animal form. I'm not a big reader though so that's all I got. Yea... that's like an issue... in history...

Ooh, on that note how about Brave New World? Excellent book. Sort of along the same path as 1984. It's an amazing book.

1984 and Animal Farm have always been abused for being identical, with just a change of characters/scenery/overall plot. They're both identical looks at Stalin and Communism's failures and weaknesses and such. I agree pretty much, it's horrible Orwell wrote them both.

Yeah, Brave New World is an awesome book. It's full of heated metaphors and such, but these outlined books arn't really the desired issue books i'm guessing. I'm guessing its a lot more Moore-ish.

I doubt Communism is a good issue to give a shot. My suggestion is do a little research on an issue your interested in. I've got a good link that will help you:

Thanks everyone. Yeah, i'm not asking for cheating, just reccomendations for some good books. I think i'll do Lies and The Lying Liars...

Actually, since I understand that your not asking for cheating I should have thrown in one that's an easy read.

Not my favorite book, but a good current one is called "Feed".

Look it up on amazon, it's basically in protest of advancing computer technology and coporate control of our culture.

What it's about is an Orwellian future where computers are now put directly into the brains of humans. This allows for coporations to advertise to them directly into their heads. As the story moves on the main character trys to fight the feed. It gets a little teen drama on you real quick and the ending will leave you feeling like you got punched in the nuts. However, it's not real long and an interesting idea. Shitty ending though. Just my suggestion.

I really couldn't figure out the point of it, and I don't want to spoil it if anyone is going to read it. But the part about her being already dead really just disturbed me, and I'm not disturbed easily. I just think he went to far trying to scare everyone and made something that was just uncharacteristic of SciFi. I just think it was all bashed in your head too much. You get the point about 20 pages in, yet everything is so redundant and boring. What can I say, it is young adult, and there's a reason why young adult books aren't considered literature.

Agreed. I had to read that one last summer, and my essay ended up like the book: lots of repetition. Not to say my English teacher didn't like the essay, but yeah that was a big fault of the book.
OH, and the "already dead" thing? That disturbed me too. That scared me just because of what an ass he was being. Hell, I watch tons of zombie movies; I know when someone is dead. He needs to go watch some zombie movies bad.

My girlfriend likes to read books like that, lots of romance and tragic death. Not my thing. Either way, we've probably jacked this thread quite enough.
