[CTA then and now]

I find programming very fun. I'm pretty good with QBASIC (even though it is really old it is still fun to use) and I am learning Visual Basic. I'm not sure if you would call HTML a programming language, but I can use it loosely.

Anybody else like programming? If so, what languages do you know/use? And does anyone know if ther is still an active QBASIC site?

Finally.

I'm taking a grade 10 programming course at my high school right now. We're working in QBasic as an introduction, and have finally finished our 3 months with it. We learned it's basic and more advanced functions, but never got into anything fancy like IFs within IFs within DO/Loops.

We start VisualBasic tomorrow, and I've heard good things from other classes that are a day ahead. It looks pretty easy, my friend has already fooled around with it during his spare time after completing work sheets.

HTML is code, but it's not really programming per se. I don't know the complete definition of "programming language" but I don't think HTML should be considered one.

I like programming too, but dont have any classes at school, I usually do most of the programming at home. I know some HTML, but Im more into the gaming programming. If only I had more time to read the tuturials and whatnot.

I've taken a couple classes at school on HTML and web design, as well as designing and maintaining our school web site.

I know a little C++ because of a class I am taking but I don't really enjoy it.

Java
Perl
SML/NJ
PHP

I didn't count HTML, JavaScript, SQL, or VB - the first three because they're not really programming languages, the last because I will forever deny having used it once.

Of those, I was only ever completely fluent in BASIC, Ada, x86, ANSI C, and Perl. Still learning PHP.

My all time favorite languages are Perl, C++, and LISP.

Any real programmer likes C++.

All I know is:
HTML [Not a skill, but i know it almost inside out]
VB [SHHHHHHHHHH! ]
Flash Actionscript [... well ... yeah]
PHP [well, like, 5 lines, but its all you need]

Web design is easy these days. Knock up some rando layout in Photoshop. Make the content in HTML. The odd media in Flash. Then operate with PHP. Frigging typical, but it works.

I know C++ and I could probably figure out most of C with that knowledge.  I am considering taking Java in AP Programming 2 and 3, anyone have any comments on Java?

If there's something else useful you could take... like typing* then I'd advise taking that instead.

Java is damn useful but it's not all that different syntactically than C++. The main differences are in how you approach development - I'd suggest just getting a good book on the subject and teaching yourself Java. If you already have a firm grasp of C++ syntax then it should be managable on your own. If you already have a firm grasp of object oriented design techniques in C++ then it should be child's play.






* Typing was (by far) the most useful class I took in HS. Everything else was just a waste of time while waiting to take the real thing in college. The only thing I learned in HS that I still use is my 100+ WPM.

Black Wrath, if you would like to learn some more QBASIC, www.qbasic.com, though it hasn't been updated for years, has great tutorials on that and many other things, including graphics.

I'm quite fluent in C. It's not really a preference, I just know it better. This semester is the first time I've had to use c++, the rest of it has been what I've learned on my own. I really have no preference. I'm more comfortable with C. Basically, if I feel it's a simple program that won't require too many lines of code, I'll use C. If it's a mind fuck of a project, I'll whip out c++.

Past that I know some C shell, K shell, pearl and basic. I'm working on unix administration right now, so I'm brushing up on those a little more. I don't like coding. I love code, I love logic, but I hate actually coding. It's like trying to translate to a retarded child.

Heh, yeah, I wanted it to be taken both ways. Calling you Kev just isn't right for the whole rip-your-head-off image you have to maintain. It just doesn't suit.

I cut my teeth in programming with BASIC in HS, when it was the only prog language for "ordinary" use (the others that I only got a taste of were COBOL and FORTRAN). Damn, I reveal my age with each passing clue.

I think cx has a point here; some of you (not all of you) really need to take some touch-typing classes. And perhaps some basic grammar too. Some posts look like they've been typed at 100wpm, but with 75% errors and simple (yet annoying to look at) spelling and locution errors. I type at less than 50wpm but with very little error. And, of course, I review and proofread my posts myself. Twice.

As I am currently finishing my undergrad work online, so also I have committed to try learning a programming language. I have decided to try C++, and as cranky has said, I should be able to at least grasp C by what I learn from C++. Anyone else want to go along, I'm picking it up from here. I'm inspired by what I read there. If y'all have any better tutorials to go to, please let me know. It's about time I figured out some things besides trying to learn HTML and PHP.

EDIT; I don't expect to become an expert in a few weeks; this is a long-term commitment. Come to think of it, I'm not expecting to become an expert at all. Humm.
