I was wondering if anyone has made a coil gun? I didn't find anything when I searched. Anyway, does anyone know how to make one? They are really easy to make. I was thinking of attching a coil barrel to one of my guns to add some footage, or intergrating it as the main firing system to eleminate alot of priming.

Yeah, I know how to make one.

Let me know when you work out how to fit 20 car batteries in your backpack.

I've already proposed such an idea. The problem would be mainly the ability ot turn on and off the charge quickly enough to have a real controlled shot. Its possible with something like a foam sphere w/ a metal bb in the middle.

Sorry, this is my third post of the day, but ive been sitting at home the whole day.
A coil gun is like a nail gun right? I don't think you need 20 car batteries. My friend told me about his teacher in his physics class with this small "nail gun" that shot a washer up in the air. But if you want to put a hole in someone, then get 20 car batteries. Anyways, seriously, a nail gun is pointless. Its not like your going to shoot someone a couple hundred feet away and get him.

It's actually called a "rail gun," because it utilizes metal rails to create a circuit which changes flux as power is pumped into the circuit. If you don't know how to make it, it's probably best you not try to make it.

Contrary to popular belief, coil guns are suprisingly hard to actually get working. Though thinly, small-guage, insulated copper wire is usually pretty cheap, it overheats like mad in a solenoid, and the actual power you get out of it is less suitable to short-displacement acceleration. If you guys want a cool electromagnetic "gun," try a rail gun with a circular track, which would allow you to accelerate the ammunition over a period of time before actually firing.

Unless you have access to two huge inductors or a very large capacitor bank, stick to pneumatics.

That website (http://scitoys.com) says that rail guns on circular tracks are impractical.

Nobody besides Airapache at my school even believes there ARE rail guns. Fuckers, they all laugh at me. I want a rail gun so the last damn thing they see is one pointed at their head/body, where it hits it's gonna rip straight through them.

Exams this week! After that back to useful posts and my job on NH.

Some quick ?'s

1. How much volts would be needed to shoot a projectile 20 ft.
2. Could I use a ring as a wieght in my stephan to get a stronger pull/push.

I'm making a coil gun, not a railgun. Coil guns are more efficeint.

Coil guns require alot of tweaking and sensors to make the magnets turn on and off at the right time. Also, all your stefans are going to be different and not going to want to....cooperate. But hey, If you can get it to work, wow, that would be cool.

They mention that a circular guass gun setup does not break the second law of thermodynamics.
