Dangit! Nowadays there are too many music genres! I was putting more music on my iPod, and I noticed that it's all categorized in three places: (I only put like 4 CD's on it so far... don't worry I'll put more!) Metal, Rock, and Alternative and Punk. What the hell? I know metal is like heavy-ish rock, but what the hell is alternative? An alternative to rock? What?! And punk? What the crap!?! Can somebody tell me what these different genres are? Lost Prophets is under metal, Aerosmith is under rock, and the Used and My Chemical Romance are under alternative and punk. I just want to know what the genres mean and stuff.

All the music catagories? You mean all the ones that have been used for, I dunno, say the last 25 years?

Here goes...

Rock = Usually 1-2 guitars, one of which is the lead singer, bass, and drums. Anywhere from Matchbox 20 to Yellowcard to Led Zeppelin (though that latter would be "Classic" rock, circa 1970's. Covers anything that uses the above instruments in a broad sense. Vocals are usually of a harsher cord, though not senseless by anymeans; the music itself covers any range of topics.

Punk = Hayday existed (at least to me) in the mid-late 80's. Exemplified by raw unrefined instrumentals using Rock's instrument set (above). Usually emotional, with relatively refined vocals.

Metal = Hard rock, basically. Runs the gamut from Goth to any harsher rock. Metallica is the quintessantial metal group. Heavy Metal/Rock groups might include such groups as Slipknot or Tool.

Alternative = somewhat "softer" (or heavier, depending on the group) Metal often incorporating some sort of electronic instrumentation. Style varies as much as the number of groups. 311 is a good example.

Pop-rock = unofficial label of the considerably...'reworked' rock of modern times. Exemplified by formulaic instrumentals with noticably high-tone emotional vocals and lyrics. Good Charlotte and New Found Glory are decent examples.

Rap-Rock = a merging of Rap and Rock, quite simply. Usually consists of metal-esque instrumentals overlayed with conventional Rock and Rap vocals and lyrics and electronica, bound together. Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit (sp?), and P.O.D. are good examples.

Rap = musical art from that whose invention was seen in the very late 70's with "Rapper's Delight." Fast, non-choral lyrics delivered over usually-electronic instrumentals, often commenting on urban plight, social issues, or new-found urban wealth. Exists in multiple sub-genres. OutKast, P. Diddy, Eminem, Nelly, and DMX are a few examples.

R&B (Rythm and Blues) = has seen a huge decline within the last decade. Unlike what the label implies, these are often minority artists comparable to mainstream Pop artists, though they often write more of their own music/lyrics. Heavy Urban and rap influences pervade the genre.

Pop = short for "popular" music. Performed either by a single singer or a group of 4-5 vocalists, they rarely create their own music and instead perform music written and produced by major companies, often "tested" for sales potential before any major recording or production. Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake are the idyllic examples, in more than one way.

Techno/Electronica = Usually purely artificial in form, most is made in Europe for discoteques and clubs. Often lacking any lyrics, it usually amazingly fast. The more repetative forms are labeled "Trance." Paul Oakenfold is a good example.

I have three more to add.

EBM:Electronic Body Music, Music made with Synthizers,Keyboards and the like, usally has a "dancable" beat hense "Body music". Isn't primarally "light" or "dark"

Industrial: Very similar to EBM much heavier though. Usally with kickin' bass lines and male voices. Realitively dark.

Synthpop/Futurepop: Similar to EBM usally light and happy though. Femine voices are common.

[Fuse]

IDM: Intelligent Dance Music. Horrible name for a decent genre. Its basically more complex form of the standard dance music you will hear in clubs. It has a similar sound, but is too complex and often shifts in ways that make it not as suitable for dancing.

Happy-Hardcore: Techno music with a high BPM and a upbeat sound. Scientifically engineered to make you sterile.

Ska: Popular a little late in the 90s (similar to punk's era). It pulls from many genres and started off of the reggea beats. Its most clearly identifiable for its heavily accented offbeat. I stand corrected

Emo: Can be acoustic or electric guitar. The lyrics must be about how sad the singer is, and he has to sound like a whiney little prick while singing them. Crying into the mic is also frequent.

Screamo: Pop-Rock or Pop-Punk style playing with the whiney emo lyrics and girlish high-pitched voices. EDIT: Meant to meantion, screaming the lyrics, as implied by the name. This was a joke definition anyways.

I resent that.

"Screamo" is post-hardcore alternative punk-rock with a guy with his balls to the wall screaming. Alexisonfire, one of my favourite bands, does not just rely on George's screams though. Dallas is always singing, and always adds the heart and emotion to the song; he also tones down some parts of the song.

It's perfect.

But anyways, all of this talk about musical genres makes me realize how pointless they are. Almost no band can be totally and inarguably catagorized.

Actually, you have SKA wrong Fuse.

Ska came BEFORE reggea in Jamaica ( Where they both originated ). Ska in its original form was much more Jazz and Blues like. Ska atarted around the 1940's or 50's and slowly evolved to the common Ska-core most people hear starting in the 90's witch is any other genrea mixed with Ska ( Usually punk ). Ska was actually named the national music of Jamaica in the 60's I beleave. Bob Marley once said that due to one hot hot summer, Ska bands started playing slower and emphasising the upbeat more witch basically started the first Raggae.

Little history lesson for you.

I would stick with Timberwolf's original list. If you start adding offbeat genres that can be incorporated into larger generes to the list you can potentially end up with a list of hundreds of genre's (well, at least 100+).

And yeah, Screamo was defined waaayyy wrong by >Fuse<... you defined Emo. Screamo more what Blackwrath said. Lots of screaming mixed with singing, emo style lyrics (sometimes)...

It's not that they are stupid, it's that there are too damn many sub-genres... it just makes it too hard to categorize because of how many there are. Sometimes it helps, though... let's you know what kind of music things are before you get it and such.

Excatly! I was trying to organize all the music I have on my computer and I had no idea where anything went. I just put it where I thought it went and left it at that. It really doesn't matter if you think about it because as long as you like it, who cares if it's considered "Gothic Rock" or "Pop"?

This is really stupid but my friend made told me about the magic formula he made for lyrics of different genres. They aren't accurate just stupid and i may have remembered them wrong so don't get mad at me if its wrong. This is just stupid anyway.

southpaw that reminds me of a song by DaVinci's Notebook. Its called "Title of the Song" and is supposed to be a boy-band type song. Instead of normal lyrics tho, they sing the ideas that would be behind the lyrics of every boy band song ever. See lyrics here.
