How do I change the shape of the basic shapes into a more custom shape?

Zero would know. If you have ever seen his images, they are modified from the original shapes.
And what do these buttons do?

Are you talking about the shape of the gun?

Before anyone asks, Gmax is a 3D Modeling program, not a nerf gun.

Damn bloody painful it is... Poor Ompa.

Turn the basic primitive shape into a poly by rightclicking, selecting "edit poly" or some such from the popup menu. From there, you'll get a side menu that allows you to switch your selection type through shape, face, line, vertex, and other such. From there, you can modify by cutting out pockets (extrusions, positive or negative values), adding vertexes using cutting planes, and various other tricks. Hell, you can modify an entire shape by simply moving it, vertex at a time.

As I suggested earlier, use the tutorials. They'll give you an outline of all the basics you need to know, such as this lesson, and what those buttons do.
