I haven't Nerfed in years, so this homemade stuff is pretty new to me. I searched through old threads and got the basic idea, but I'm still looking for info.

I want to make a single-shot, manual pump gun. I'm going off the Cutlass design and plan to use a bike pump instead. Now my questions are..

1. Do I need to make any modifications to the pump and/or hose handle?

I've also come across 3DBBQ's homemades. They look friggen sweet.

2. What advantage is gained by using the check valve and is it necessary?

Okay, that's all I need to know right now. Thanks.

If you embed the bike pump into pvc then you want a check valve, otherwise it doesn't hold any air. A tire pump valve(schrader valve) works as a check valve within itself, elimininating the need for a check valve.

You can still embed the pump in a piece of PVC without needing a check valve - you just need to keep that little hose that comes with the pump as it contains the check valve.
By Schrader valve, do you mean a tubeless tire valve? If so, the check valve in them only works if there is no pump connected to it - when you attach a bike pump, the hose presses on the little rod sticking out of the middle of the tire valve to let the air in - this is why there is a check valve in the hose.
