Congrats, I just noticed that we set another all-time most people online record. Damn, this was the time I spent at the dinner table.

Yeah, 36 guests, that is a lot. Could some of them possible be members that were too lazy to log in? I'll wait for CX on the final note on this.

Actually, the record is 55! And there are 53 right now! Wow...

Stupid fucking flood control.

Guests is people with accounts who aren't logged in, plus people who have no account but read regularly, plus people who just happened to get here via Google and are reading something, plus, potentially, the GoogleBot which indexes the site.

My guess as to the percentages, based on doing a little IP comparing from time to time, is that about half of our guests are regulars who don't have accounts. The other half are a mix of the other three groups. There is never more than one GoogleBot spider on the site at any given time, though he is here quite frequently.

a spider. The general definition of a spider is basically any program that reads in file from a webserver and collects information. The google bot is indexing the site so that threads and articles that are new show up in google searches. Other spiders may scour the internet looking for e-mail adresses in html files for junk mail lists (which is why you should avoid having your e-mail appear in text on a web page as often as possible)

Wasn't the most users ever on 50 really early on in NH history? I could've sworn it got lost after the overhaul or something.

Edit: damn. I was hoping that the color tag would hide the "Langley edit this post on......"

That was due to a quirk in GoogleBot, actually. It failed to close connections properly and showed up as a couple dozen simultaneous users on forum sites. They fixed it pretty quickly. I reset the statistics because it was lame.

Airsoft999, what exactly are you having trouble with there? I'm talking about people who have registered but are 'signed out' and show up as guests.

I was talking about a category in my forum software, singular, not a bunch of people I don't know, plural.

I could say:

Our guests are mysterious people.

and:

Guests is one of the two categories in the online user view.

and both are correct and appropriate.

That, kids, is why you don't question the use of grammar in Cx's posts. I think alot of us are perfectly competent of the English language, and we needn't just blurt out "Ohh! You made a mistake! I could still read your post, but it's a mistake!" where cleary, you just need to think about how the word is being used in the conext of the sentence.

Cx' could've said " 'Guests' is people without accounts." Making 'Guests' an object, a singular word that implies a plural. It's hard to explain, but by adding those ' ' it makes alot more sense to the brain. "The 'Guests' are people without accounts." could've been used aswell, but since the former is direct from the text, it works.

Wow, I've been gone a week (computer problems) and my first post back is a grammar lesson that will most likely be shot don't quite quickly if I'm not careful.

Not in the game anymore, but it was great while it lasted. Thanks for the great years of fun, NH!
