Gmail Invites are emailed out by the user to a friend, so logic would say, yes, you need an email address. Current? No. Just sign up for a cheapo lame thing like hotmail, get the thing sent over, and delete your old account.

Obviously you're subscribing to some extra service or buying that extra 10MB storage or something. Just watch what you're subscribing to, uncheck the majority of the checkboxes apart from agreeing to terms and conditions...

Gmail is now offering full signups in Australia and New Zealand, so America isn't far off.
You can also get an invite sent to your phone using this, I think.
