I recently purchased a nerf sm5k and after I pump it up, the tank slowly let's air back into the line for the pump until the tank is empty.

I wanted to try and fix it but don't even know where to begin. Is there anything I can do to fix it maybe without taking it apart? Not sure how the internals work on this blaster but maybe one of you guys know?

Also I'm interested in an aftermarket tank as well, like the at2k but I don't see anywhere to buy it. I did a lot of searching but couldn't find where to buy those tanks.

I would prefer not to get a tanks from another supermaxx blaster...

If its actually leaking back down the line then it sounds like a bad check valve in your pump. Swap the pump and see if you still have a problem. A pump swap should be very simple and leave you with a wide amount of options for substitutes.

You don't have to swap the pump. Just cut the tubing and splice in an aquarium check valve.

You can also identify the leak by dunking most of the blasters guts underwater and watching for bubbles while you pump. 

 

The super max tanks are pull pin types. That means the rod sticking out of the back runs all the way through the tank and a plug pushes into the inside of the nozzle outlet. You've got o rings at the plug tip as well as around the pull rod as the rod exits the back. you might be leaking out of either location. If you can verify that your tank is in fact leaking, you might be able to repair it but you'll have to cut your tank in half to do so. You'll also need a sleeve to glue both halves back together. Before you do anything you'll need to source a pvc pipe/fitting to repair it. You may have to heat and stretch the pipe over the tank to get it to fit inside (grease the tank so you can get it back out too) then cut the tank in half with a pipe cutter. Replace the o rings if you can find a good replacement (don't bend the pull rod). Fit up the two halves with super glue then use pvc primer and cement to glue both halves into the sleeve you prepared earlier.   It's a long shot but with some luck you might be able to repair it. - worst case scenario, it's already leaking now so you might as well risk breaking it worse trying to repair it.

As that is an older blaster, maybe you should try to spot any leaks? Unfortunately, there is really no way to fix your blaster without taking out the internals... As some other members suggested above, replacing the check valve is the way to go. While you're inside the blaster, it would be a good idea to lube the pump with silicone grease.
As for the AT2K, you can commonly find that blaster at thrift stores/garage sales.

All very helpful. Isn't the at2k a metal air tank that was designed by a member! That's what I'm looking for so it won't leak. It is the tank leaking down the line that goes into the pump. The blaster is apart that's no issue.

Will that make it though so my release valve stops letting air out so it will just keep pumping up until it leaks? I want to have the air release at factory release amount for longjevity..

Edit: Also everything looses pressure at some time. The metal ones just can hold more pressure.

Instead spending a lot of money on a metal tank that will still leak, and make your blaster heavy, just buy a new blaster. You can thrift a Supermaxx 5000, or if you have lots of money buy a new one. Thrifting will take up lots of your time, but it is worth it. If you are feeling adventurous and cheap, just go to some thrift stores twice a week, and you will eventually find one.

No, the at2k is a blaster made by Nerf. At2k is just the acronym for Air tech 2000. Hope that saves you from future incidents of looking like a noob .

Within a few mins there's barely any air left in the tank. What is causing this. How can I fix? Information above doesn't solve the issue yet.

Your described issue is speculated in a prior that definitely gives you the information you need to solve your problem:

Aquarium stores or a pet store that sells fish tank parts would carry them. If you have a petsmart near you this one should work.

Will this still allow the pump to stop once it reaches a certain psi? Or will it no longer release pressure after 3 pumps? I don't want it to shoot extreme fps

All adding that valve is doing, is only allowing air to flow one way, from the pump to the tank, so that way it doesn't flow pack out the pump. It has little to do with the over pressure release valve in the pump.
