It would be a fair bit easier to just epoxy or otherwise glue a piece of plastic to the existing part and add serrations to it.

It could work, if you print it dense enough. But, I wouldn't trust the PLA to not shear apart when you try priming it with a heavy spring load.
Although, if you print it out and use it as the base for a greensand casting in aluminium, you might be able to get away with using that design.

Nice model. If I can get some printer time at the hackerspace, I'll run one off in ABS, 100% infill, and report back.
