Most forum sites, mailing lists, usenet groups, etc have a high lurker to poster ratio.

Basically, the number of one-time visitors plus the regulars who don't really feel like joining and posting is significantly greater than the number of regular contributors.

My theory is that it is possibly a regular user who deleted their cookies so that their parents/girlfriend/wife don't find out if they have been looking at pr0n, hence them going to the site without logging in. Or, it just may be because of random wanderers just looking at the site.

Why does it annoy you to know that there are people reading the site?

At least half of those people get here via Google searches. Since we average two new members a day, many of them probably read for a while, then sign up. Keep in mind that we want people to read the forums before they start posting.

I browsed Slashdot for years before I signed up and started posting.

For the curious, here are our 20 most common Google hits so far this month:

1  117  6.18%  nerf guns
2  103  5.44%  nerfhaven
3  49  2.59%  nerf
4  36  1.90%  nerf nite finder
5  27  1.43%  nerf guns for sale
6  26  1.37%  homemade silencer
7  20  1.06%  nerf crossbow
8  20  1.06%  nerf haven
9  18  0.95%  nerf guns on ebay
10  17  0.90%  nerf gun
11  16  0.85%  nerf mods
12  15  0.79%  nerf machine gun
13  14  0.74%  air bazooka
14  14  0.74%  nerf blasters
15  14  0.74%  nerf wars
16  13  0.69%  nerf modifications
17  12  0.63%  family guy avatars
18  12  0.63%  homemade air gun
19  12  0.63%  homemade gun
20  10  0.53%  homemade nerf guns

Hehe family guy avatars... Interesting. I'm rather suprised that there were that many direct searches for Nerfhaven though.

Those are the retards who don't know how to type a URL into their browser so they just search for everything. I support users at work who do the same thing.

<Fooz> In a perfect world... spammers would get caught, go to jail, and share a cell with many men who have enlarged their penisses, taken Viagra and are looking for a new relationship.
