I have been researching this question for quite some time, and have yet to find an answer! What are the benefits of using slugs (compared to other darts, what type of Blasters are they used in, and how can they easily be made (and or obtained)?

The benefits of slugs are that they provide stefan type performance in higher powered NIC and/or homemade blasters. The components of the slugs are fairly cheap and the felt tip allows them to feed well in hoppers. 

 

They can be made easily, but it takes practice to get the hot glue (or other adhesive) applied the right way, foam cut squarely and washers centered on the adhesive pads.

 

Slugs can be obtained by either buying them from someone who makes them (such as myself, KaneTheMediocre, snickers and others) or making them yourself. If you're really into NIC style play and have the time, it's well worth the effort to learn how to make slugs and make them yourself. Most people follow that guide for the most part, but may tweak exactly how they make their slugs, such as choice in foam, adhesive used, foam length, etc.

I'm going to second the guide recommendation. Ryan's guide for making Slugs is the best.  I'd add that the main advantages of slugs are that they are pretty consistent, they feed more reliably in hoppers than any other type, and in many places they are the only thing you're permitted to use outside of stock darts and silicone domes.

From a player perspective, slugs are quite accurate (if well-constructed), and feed well through various types of loaders. I can't say the same about more modern soft-dome darts.

From a war-organizer perspective, I like that their weak long-ranged performance acts as a practical power cap for blasters. They're also not particularly painful, so you don't feel as bad when you shoot children.

That's going to depend a lot on the particular mod. You might be better off using stock darts for most Superstock blasters. Most of the modern Elite blasters have pretty decent airflow, and so work a bit better if you just leave the posts in there. They fill up dead space, as well as counteract some of the squishiness inherent in hollow-cored stock darts.

If you're actually doing stuff like replacing the barrels and springs, then slugs are a good choice. But universal suction darts work pretty well. They are less prone to the spiraling that plagues streamlines.

If you're using them in stock blasters, I wouldn't bother. In my opinion, the China darts are just so cheap and some of them work, really well. USCs fly straight, and can hop in DIY grade blasters if the tips snipped. If you're doing DIY class, slugs help hop and are usually more common, but for just cheap and quanitity. If it's superstock, I wouldn't bother with slugs, especially since hosts usually don't like homemade darts.

The only reason to ever use slugs is if you are using a powerful hoppered blaster.  Their range performance is abysmal compared to basically any other dart launched at similar speed, BUT they have two miraculous characteristics: High velocity accuracy and hopper compatibility.

I'd even argue that they're cheaper than stock-class darts. You can get third-party darts from china for ~$0.04-0.10/dart; last time I did the numbers on slugs it came out to about that but then you needed to put work in to make them. Unless you are *super* fast at making them or don't value your time at all, they aren't cheaper anymore.

You can actually get some chinadarts for even cheaper, but I meant in comparison to store bought. 
They're fine to make if you have lots of time and have materials around but otherwise suck.

This might not be what you had in mind, but I made pretty dangerous slugs once.
It's super simple

What you need
Hands, glue (I used superglue), decent dart, large screw (mine was leftovers from an IKEA table)

1. Use hands to remove rubber tip from dart.
2. Glue up the screw
3. Insert screw
4. Remember not to shoot anywhere near something valuable, or a living creature

It has terrible range but within like 10,15 feet the results are devastating. You might need to beef up your gun before using these. Also rifling not recommended as the metal might screw it up (haha see what I did there)

Anyway these are probably not war practical or war legal. Or just plain legal.

We're playing with toy guns that shoot foam darts - trying to hurt people is exactly the opposite of what we want to do. Don't make fucking death darts.

If you're more interested in "doing some damage", or just shooting projectiles really far, build a spud gun.
