Ok, let me clear a few things up. Vintage pretty much explained how the springers work, so I'll go onto the other kinds of airsoft weapons. Another pretty cheap and beginner weapon would be a mini aeg; a airsoft gun that runs off of AA batteries (sometimes other types) and is 1:3 scale to a real firearm. These can shoot full auto and single fire with .12g bb's. Pretty fun in a backyard. This type of gun uses a piston to give a burst of air to propell a bb.
Tokyo Marui Mini Mp5 The next step up from a springer is a gas pistol, which is very powerful. These guns are heavy weight, 1:1 scale, and use green gas to fire .2g-.25g bb's. This model can shoot semi or fully automatic.
KSC Glock 18 And last, but certainly not least, is your aeg, which runs off special batteries. These are full size rifles with realistic tradesmarks, heavy weight, and down right cool looking. They are used in big airsoft events everywhere and are ideal for the serious and experienced airsofter. All these aeg's are the best kind of airsoft guns you can buy and they usually have a stock fps of 280 (but can be greatly increased with upgrades). These rifles also work with a high grade piston/s and metal gears.
Tokyo Marui M733 One last thing about airsoft guns. If you do decide to get an airsoft gun, make sure it has hop up. Hop up is built into the gun and puts a foward spin on the bb, making it go further and straighter.
So, that is a very brief breakdown of the major types of airsoft guns. Although many of you probably don't care about these specs, some people might.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that there are spring airsoft rifles that need to be cocked after every shot. There are some good and durable models out there right now.
