I've got some questions about skirt seals because I couldn't really find anything.

Okay so here are my questions:

1. Skirt seals are made from rubber right? if so then it wouldn't harm to dry fire or does it?

2. if it harms to dryfire with a skirt seal, why?

3. is it only available on mcmaster or can you buy it at shops?

Thanks in advance,

Tycho

1. Yes they are made of rubber. It does harm to dry fire.

2. Because there is a lot of force from the spring, and you have to use a piece of polycarb in front to mount the skirt on the plunger rod. The polycarb is what's hitting the front of the blaster, not the soft rubber.

3. McMaster only to my knowledge.

McMaster-Carr is the main source for the skirt seals we normally use, but there are other supply houses.  They are used in various industrial applications, so checking with bearing and seal companies in your area would be good.  U-cup seals are actually made to be used in plungers, and cost a lot less.

A skirt seal is a shaft seal used in motors and other types of engines. It sits around the shaft and prevents dirt and other contaminates from getting into the motor.

skirt seaks are a circular rubber seal that spreads apart to fit perfectly inside a plunger tube, click here for a good example of ones that people have used in the past. "stretch fit shaft seals" are what people are usually talking about when they say skirt seal.
