If this is directed to people who are acquaintances of people in the NIC, who are probably unfamiliar with the NIC, it's probably not good to list all the dumb things that people do and say "it's not common sense to do these things."
Regarding the unfortunate loss of life to which you refer, those students died as the result of a car accident. It is immaterial to the accident that "Nerf wars" was a game at the school, except that there may have been a Nerf blaster in the car. Driving distracted is always a bad idea, as is driving without a seatbelt (which was also at fault here). My condolences go to the families and friends impacted by this, but negligent reporting is the only link this has to Nerf.

Cool, but I don't really see the point... you're critiquing mass media, which is pretty much never going to change its stance on nerf no matter how much our community rallies in support of our cause. We just don't have the support necessary.

I know, but when I found that Nerf was part of the cause, I felt the need to make something that maybe, just maybe, prevent some idiot from doing something stupid. according to the news, an interview stated that "sitting in the back of a pickup truck shooting nerf guns, breaking into random houses, and taking hostages" was an integral part of some game types, I had the urge to go on a "rant". We can get the support, if we fellow nerfers all show ourselves and show how much we care. Now given the many types of people in society, sadly this feat will most likely never be attempted.

I hope that it is clear to anyone who visits NerfHaven that automobiles can be extremely dangerous and that driving or riding in a car while participating in a game adds totally unnecessary risk to what would otherwise be a relatively safe activity.
Over the years, assassins games have attracted negative attention from school administrators, police, and the media. I do not recommend playing in assassins style games, particularly un-sanctioned highschool games with cash prizes. The high stakes and the nature of the game encourages reckless and disruptive behavior, even where such behavior is explicitly against the game's rules. Sneaking around with a gun-shaped toy, and ambushing people at their school, home or job defies common sense.
The majority of events organized on NerfHaven have been out in the open in a controlled environment away from bystanders and other dangers. Even college HvZ games are usually run by school sanctioned organizations which are good at self-policing and strictly enforcing safety rules. I expect everyone on this site to continue to uphold that standard. Stay safe and use common sense. It's hard enough to participate in a hobby centered around toys that increasingly resemble firearms. We don't need another reason for the media to involve us in the next big moral panic.

Well, with a title "How stupid are you People" kinda sets a condescending and negative tone.
But regardless, no response from the NIC is really needed. It was hazardous driving and failure to use proper safety restraints that caused the deaths and NOT the use of Nerf products.
If I were you guys, I would not worry about any sort of backlash or pending legislation.

I live about an hour from Lakeville, so I'm getting a lot of the local media stuff that the national news is leaving out.
These weren't NIC-style "nerf wars", these were games involving nerf guns that were basically a bunch of kids playing James Bond/Jason Bourne in a populated community. Your paper gives me the impression that you believe the deaths occured at a "nerf war" where we meet in a field or a park and run around for a few hours shooting at each other, and that's not at all the case.
Just food for thought.
