OK, I'm trying to figure out my sales pitch to the Student Activities, and I need a little help. //Comment (means I need help there)
<salesPitch>
Purpose:
The students will:
  • Have fun
  • Burn off calories
  • Maybe meet new people
My purpose: Have fun!

Rules:

  • Eye-protection is mandatory in the war-zone
  • No face-shots
  • All blasters must have a muzzle velocity of no more than 120 fps //Is that too high?
  • All blasters must have a blaze-orange muzzle or be obviously a toy //How else can I allow vintage blasters without repainting
  • All blasters must have a plastic tip //No exposed metal muzzles
  • No meleeing; shooting only.
  • Have Fun!
Why here?

  • Cover/Urban map
  • Food on location - I won't have to arrange for people to carpool to a fast-food joint, if you have the Subway open
</salesPitch>

Anything else?

I was able to convince my office to purchase about $400 USD worth of Nerf Blasters for our variety of events. My sales pitch so to speak, is it was all stock stuff though. I had to provide a game plan. Make is simple but not too simple. show some game types. and if this is a BYOB kind of war/game, unless the Student Activities director is familiar with homemade NIC stuff... I would keep it strictly to stock or modified stock blasters.

Griever 2112 still plays with his alpha trooper quite often despite owning one of the scariest +bows.

Reconsider melee. You already have barrel taps, and stock/low FPS guns. What's your age range? If you're running stock blasters, barrel taps/melee isn't needed. Barrel taps are used when the blaster would cause physical harm under a certain range.

College. The melee weapons are fun, but barrel taps can be eliminated.
Actually, I just did.

You can buy orange electrical tape to mark toy blasters. It's a good buy if you want to do full paintjobs, but still play safely with it marked as a toy.

Melee will end up getting your game in trouble or banned. Inevitably someone swings too hard, always. Many schools won't allow you to play if you even mention students hitting each other with anything be it foam or pool noodles. Also, orange ductape/etape is a good compromise for people who don't have orange tips but don't want to paint their blasters. Just make sure they have it on the entire time.

Thanks, I'll make that change. Just did.

The Penn State Urban Gaming Club always used the spiel that nerfing (especially when events can be ran Friday's/Saturday's) late into the evening serve as a safe place for students to socialize in a safe, controlled area of play that doesn't involve drinking and getting in general trouble.

Maybe that can help?
