we are talking a stryfe and 18650 size cells personally speaking there is only so much bulk i would want hanging on the outside and 2 18650 is about my limit for pistol config but i suppose 2 on either side of the mag would fit too.Then again, you could always run more if you mount externally.

I'm saying it would be good for 180's in general. If you ran 2 in series, the stall would be around 25 Amps so those batteries would be fine.

In that case you probably shouldn't be giving him anything more potent than regular old alkaline batteries, and I see no reason why he needs a 180'd flywheel blaster.Exactly and this kid I am building for is.
If you or a responsible adult are going to be playing with him, or at least be in charge of charging the batteries, then go ahead with high discharge cells or packs along with 180s.
If you must mod AND must use "super safe" batteries then maybe try
1. swap in RM2 motors (optional: do a c-mod to increase the motors' durability)
2. Do a full rewire (although maybe you should leave the locks in for the kid's safety)
3. Use AA alkalines in the stock battery tray
Disclaimer: If you're looking for straight up performance and reliability, FK-180SH-3240 motors with a 7volt high discharge pack are what you want...RM2 motors aren't great and tend to burn up at higher voltages, but they will give you some performance improvements even if you don't try to push them.

but yes i should have clarified that i was talking about dropping the 180 in favor of motors that run well at stock voltages and used normal batteries or standard rechargeables. But honestly if the kid is as dumb as the op is making him out to be then he should not be handling the gun in the first place he will likely put his own eye out or mangle a finger.

Running 180s at lower voltages and lower currents will likely result in a blaster that will work only well as stock or so, I would think. Spin up times might even be slower.
If you 180 a 4 aa blaster and put in the standard batteries, it will still sound beast.

I only ran them on stock aa's to test to see if my circuit was working and my solders were OK and they sounded like RM2s on a 2s Lipo. If you watch my youtube video of my motor replaced stryfe, It's essentially the same and you can get 85 feet flat pretty consistently with insane reliability untill your battery runs flat.
